Isaac T. Robillo Hospital Corporation, formerly Calinan General Hospital (1979-1995) is a privately-owned health service facility established along Km.26 Davao-Bukidnon Road, Brgy. Calinan, Davao City in June 3, 1979. It takes its roots and namesake from the philanthropic efforts of Mr. Isaac T. Robillo (ITR), a policeman and businessman. Mr. ITR wanted to ‘payback’ from the profits and benefits he has gained from the booming logging industry of the time- from which his company: Maguindanao Timber Products, Inc. (MTPI) is a major player. Thus he turned to his son, Ruben, who has recently graduated from Davao Medical Center’s first post-graduate residency on General Surgery; in establishing together the Calinan General Hospital.
Calinan at that time was small town accessible only by a dirt road, roughly thirty (30) kilometers from the city and its nearest government facility. The initial plan was to donate Calinan General Hospital or ‘General’ for what it has ever since been popularly called- to the City Government of Davao to operate as a district hospital. However the plan did not materialize since the latter was not in the position to operate it fiscally at that time.
Mr. ITR returned to his Creator in 1994, following the death of one of his sons to a politically-motivated assassination. It was on 1997 that, Dr. Ruben G. Robillo, subsequently renamed the hospital in in honor of ITR’s legacy.
The 1990s also witnessed the fast development of the areas around Calinan with the opening of huge banana plantations. In response, the hospital first expanded with the addition of a new 2-storey wing to house patient accommodations in 1998.
