TRAINING: EARLY DETECTION OF READING DIFFICULTIES IN K-1 STUDENTS

The CANDEV team led by Dr Riza Isaguirre delivered a presentation focused on Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia and how Kindergarten and Grade 1 teachers can use informal testing tools to detect early signs of reading/academic failure in the classroom.

Yesterday's training event drew a highly engaged and dedicated group of public and private school teachers, all eager to understand and support their students better.

Far too often, when addressing behavioral concerns in children, whether at home or in the classroom, the focus of communication from parents or teachers centers solely on the specific undesired behavior exhibited. While identifying the problematic action is a crucial first step, a comprehensive understanding and effective intervention require a more holistic approach. It is absolutely essential to meticulously observe and document not only the behavior itself but also the events that precede it (the antecedent), the immediate outcomes that follow it (the consequence), and, perhaps most importantly, the underlying reason or purpose the behavior serves for the child (the function).

Considering the antecedent provides valuable context, illuminating the potential triggers or situations that increase the likelihood of the behavior occurring.

Similarly, carefully analyzing the consequence is critical. What typically happens immediately after the behavior occurs? Is the child given attention (positive or negative)? Are they allowed to avoid a task? Do they gain access to a desired object or activity? The consequence plays a significant role in reinforcing or discouraging the behavior.

Finally, determining the function of the behavior is paramount for developing effective intervention strategies. Why is the child engaging in this behavior? What need are they trying to meet? Common functions of behavior include seeking attention, escaping or avoiding a task or situation, gaining access to tangibles or activities, or sensory stimulation.

THIS WEEK, UK CELEBRATES CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK
Hopefully, Davao City and the rest of the Philippines will have our own awareness week too!!! Importante ang mental health and psychological well-being for kids, especially those with special needs.

Kids diagnosed with ADHD, ASD, Dyslexia, Down Syndrome, etc. are more likely to experience:

✅ bullying
✅ emotional neglect
✅ parental abuse
✅ verbal abuse
✅ chronic academic failure
✅ academic/school stress
✅ difficulty with emotional regulation
✅ poor self-esteem, self-efficacy
✅ anxiety and depression
✅ eating problems
✅ sleep problems
✅ gaming/internet addiction
✅ social rejection
✅ frequent comparisons
✅ stigma, isolation and discrimination
✅ lack of academic and social accommodations
✅ limited social skills
