Most artificial eyes (ocular prostheses) typically last about 5 years, especially with proper care, regular cleaning and annual polishing.

Some patients may use the same prosthesis longer with consistent maintenance and routine check-ups—but replacement ultimately depends on comfort, socket changes, and surface condition.

You may need a re-polish or replacement if your prosthetic eye:

• appears yellowish or dull
• feels scratchy or uncomfortable
• produces increased mucus or discharge
• feels loose or looks less balanced than before
