Upon consultation, patient presented with ill-fitting dentures. She said that her dentures did not fit well after having her tooth restored. A few days prior, she visited someone claiming to be a dentist for tooth restoration. She pointed at her upper left first molar tooth. The procedure was done at the "practitioner's" house on a bed.

Clinical examination shows tooth restoration that covers not only her first molar but the second premolar as well. The two teeth were cemented together, with the cement also contacting the gum area. After removal of the cement, the tooth in question was not prepared for a restoration. Cement was placed only on top of the two teeth to cover the caries.

If not corrected, patient would not be able to use her dentures. Proper restorations should mimic the natural contours of a tooth.

Overhangs or dental fillings that extend beyond the tooth surface can significantly contribute to gum disease by promoting plaque accumulation which can cause inflammation and eventually bone loss around the teeth.

Patient could also eventually experience dental infection due to the progression of the dental caries.

The patient was even lucky enough to not have her teeth drilled as this may have been a bigger problem. Tooth restorations, as simple as they may seem are not simple at all. There are multiple things that dentists check for like depth, occlusal and proximal contact areas, overhangs etc. Please be cautious about illegal practitioners. Stay safe everyone.

What is ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

A root canal is a dental procedure that treats infected or damaged tooth pulp. The pulp is the innermost part of the tooth that carries nerve and blood vessels and is responsible for giving sensation to the tooth. The procedure involves removing the infected pulp and replacing it with a filling creating a seal to avoid future infections.

Why is it done?

RCT is done to save a tooth that may otherwise need extraction. This is also the treatment option for teeth that have cavities to large for a tooth filling.
