Why don’t I recommend permanent refractive corrections like LASIK, PRK, and SMILE for my patients?
That is because, our eyes and vision regularly undergoes changes in every period of our life. That is why a permanent and irreversible correction like LASIK or any kind of refractive surgery, isn’t something that I would want to undergo myself, nor would recommend to my patients.
Here are the changes that our eyes and vision will undergo as we age:
Emmetropization
Emmetropization is the growth process of our eyes. The growth of the eyeball is fastest from 0-8 years old. The eyeball can continue to grow beyond 8 years old but in a slower rate.
Sometimes the eyeball can continue to
grow up to 25 years old.
Presbyopia
Presbyopia causes blurring of vision when looking at near objects. It commonly starts around 40 years old. Farsighted individuals undergo presbyopia earlier than 40 yrs, sometimes as early as late 20s. Nearsighted people have presbyopia
later than 40 yrs, sometimes in their 50s.
Cataract Formation
Cataracts causes the crystalline lens to become opaque and thicker than normal.
This is why early-stage cataract may cause some improvement in a person’s near vision.
However, as the cataract advances,
the crystalline lens becomes cloudy and opaque which causes overall blurring of vision.
The three phenomenons above, all naturally occur because of our eye’s growth and aging process. That is why, orthokeratology is a safer and better alternative than refractive surgery. With orthokeratology, we can choose to maintain the amount of correction, adjust the amount of correction, or reverse the amount of correction depending on the changes that are taking place in our eyes and vision, unlike LASIK, PRK, and SMILE.
So if you want a vision correction which can eliminate your need for eyeglasses, but at the same time adapt to the changes of your eyes and vision as you age, go for orthokeratology.
