The J.J. Valderrama Behavioral Management Center hosted PsychExplore 2026, a flagship program of the CMC Psychology Department, on March 27, 2026, bringing third-year Psychology students into a space where theory is translated into lived clinical practice.

The program opened with a welcoming message from Jerry Joseph C. Valderrama, ICAP II, ICAP RS, Program Director and CEO, who underscored the responsibility of future psychology professionals to uphold ethical standards while remaining grounded in compassion and real-world understanding.

At the core of the activity was a lecture on psychological assessment delivered by Argel Joseph S. Aventura, RPsy, RPm, ICAP I, Clinical Operations Supervisor. The session outlined the centerโ€™s actual assessment processes, from intake and test administration to documentation and interpretation, situating these within the broader context of rehabilitation and client-centered care.

Participants were then guided through the facility, gaining firsthand insight into therapeutic environments and multidisciplinary approaches to recovery. A structured demonstration of psychological testing further deepened their appreciation of both the technical precision and ethical discipline required in assessment practice.

PsychExplore 2026 reflects a shared commitment to formative education, one that moves beyond instruction and into immersion. Through this collaboration, students were not only informed, but also oriented toward the realities, responsibilities, and deeper purpose of psychological work.

The partnership between the JJ Valderrama Behavioral Management Center and Central Mindanao Colleges continues to affirm the importance of experiential learning in shaping competent, ethical, and practice-ready professionals.

"Gradually, as we become more God-centered than self-centered, our despair turns to hope."

Basic Text, p. 95

What a glorious thing to have hope! Before coming to Narcotics Anonymous, many of us lived lives of utter hopelessness. We believed we were destined to die from our disease.

Many members speak of being on a "pink cloud" their first months in the program. We've stopped using, made some friends, and life looks promising. Things are going great. Then reality sets in. Life is still life--we still lose jobs, our partners still leave us, friends still die, we still get sick. Abstinence is no guarantee that life will always go our way.

When the reality of life on its own terms sets in, we turn to our Higher Power and remember that life happens the way life happens. But no matter what occurs in our recovery we need not despair, for there is always hope. That hope lies in our relationship with our Higher Power.

This relationship, as expressed by the thought in our text, develops over time: "Gradually we become more God-centered." As we rely more and more on the strength of our Higher Power, life's struggles don't have to drag us into the sea of despair. As we focus more on God, we focus less on ourselves.

Just for Today: I will rely on my Higher Power. I will accept that, regardless of what happens, my Higher Power will provide me with the resources to live with it.

๐Ÿ’ก โ€œLike shells shaped by tides and time, we carry the marks of where weโ€™ve been. In recovery, we donโ€™t erase the cracks - we paint them with color, meaning, and courage, turning what once felt broken into something beautifully our own.โ€

Recovery is often misunderstood as a process of returning to who we once were - unmarked, unbroken, unchanged. But in truth, healing is not about erasing the past. It is about transforming it. Just like shells shaped by the constant push and pull of the ocean, our lives bear the imprint of every experience, both painful and meaningful.

Each crack, scar, or imperfection tells a story. Rather than hiding these, recovery invites us to engage with them creatively and compassionately. Activities like painting shells become powerful metaphors for this journey. What was once seen as damaged becomes a canvas, something that can be redefined with intention, color, and purpose.

Through expression, we reclaim ownership of our narratives. We begin to see that brokenness is not the end of our story, but part of its beauty. The act of painting, whether literal or symbolic, represents courage, the willingness to face our past and reshape how it lives within us.

In this way, recovery becomes an art form. It is not about perfection, but about authenticity. It is about honoring where weโ€™ve been while choosing, deliberately and bravely, what we become.

"We do the footwork and accept what's being given to us freely on a daily basis." Basic Text, p. 47

Our relationship with our Higher Power is a two-way street. In prayer, we speak and God listens. When we meditate, we do our best to listen for the will of our Higher Power. We know that we are responsible for our part of the relationship. If we do not pray and listen, we shut our Higher Power out of our lives.

When we think about our relationship with our Higher Power, it's important to remember which one we are: the powerless one. We can ask for guidance; we can ask for willingness or strength; we can ask for knowledge of our Higher Power's will--but we cannot make demands. The God of our understanding--the one with the power--will fulfill that half of the relationship by giving us exactly what we need, when we need it.

We need to take action every day to keep our relationship with a Higher Power alive. One way we do this is by applying the Eleventh Step. Then we remember our own powerlessness and accept the will of a Power greater than ourselves.

Just for Today: In my relationship with my Higher Power, I am the powerless one. Remembering who I am, today I will humbly accept the gifts of the God I understand.

๐Ÿ’ก The journey to recovery is like curating an aquarium - you build it, balance it, and protect it until it becomes a place where life can flourish again.

Each part of the aquarium is chosen and arranged thoughtfully so it can support life. In the same way, recovery invites us to be mindful of the habits we build, the people we welcome into our lives, and the environment we create for ourselves.

Balance is at the heart of both. An aquarium thrives when its conditions are just right. Recovery also grows through balance. It means learning how to understand our emotions, set healthy boundaries, and create a sense of stability within ourselves. This balance develops over time, shaped by small and consistent efforts.

Care and protection help everything flourish. An aquarium is nurtured through regular attention, gentle adjustments, and a commitment to keeping it healthy. Recovery asks for the same kind of care. It is about honoring our progress, choosing what supports our well-being, and continuing to show up for ourselves each day.

In the beginning, the changes may be quiet and subtle. But with patience and steady care, life begins to grow. What starts as something simple can slowly become vibrant and full.

Recovery is a living process. With time, intention, and compassion, it becomes a space where life can truly flourish again.

The J.J. Valderrama Behavioral Management Center (JJVBMC) celebrated a meaningful milestone as it held the Completion Ceremony for the REASON to HEAL Program on March 3, 2026, at the JJVBMC facility. The ceremony recognized the pioneering batch of working clients who successfully completed the rehabilitation program.

The REASON to HEAL Program, an initiative of REASON Phils. Inc. (Recovery Environment of Addiction Support, Opportunities, and Network) in partnership with JJVBMC and the Davao City Justice Zone, was created to help individuals who are mandated by the courts to undergo rehabilitation but are unable to afford treatment. Through this shared-cost model, participants were able to receive quality rehabilitation services at no cost, giving them a real opportunity to pursue recovery.

During the program, Argel Joseph Aventura, RPsy, RPm, ICAP I, Clinical Operations Supervisor of JJVBMC, presented the rationale behind the REASON to HEAL initiative and introduced the candidates for completion. He emphasized the importance of making treatment accessible, especially for individuals who genuinely want to rebuild their lives but lack the financial means to access rehabilitation services.

The certificates of completion were conferred by Jerry Joseph C. Valderrama, ICAP II, ICAP RS, Chief Executive Officer of JJVBMC. In his message, he spoke about the continued commitment of JJVBMC and REASON Phils. Inc. to support individuals who are poor yet deserving of a chance to experience treatment, recovery, and a renewed life.

Evelyn โ€œRuthโ€ L. Valderrama, Executive Assistant of JJVBMC, also shared the background and inspiration behind the program. As someone who has personally experienced recovery, she spoke passionately about her advocacy to help others who are struggling with addiction. She offered heartfelt advice to the graduates, especially on staying sober while fulfilling the responsibilities of family life as a parent and provider.

Also present during the ceremony was Mr. Ronaldo Rivera, Consultant and Recovery Coach for the UIC Kaduyog Sagop Kinabuhi Program. In his message, he highlighted the important role of the Davao City Justice Zone and the initiatives of the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) in supporting individuals in recovery. He also reminded the graduates about the daily challenges of sobriety and encouraged them to begin and end each day with prayer as a way of strengthening their commitment to recovery.

The organizers also expressed their sincere gratitude to Hon. Judge Rowena Apao-Adlawan of the Davao City Justice Zone, whose support and belief in the power of recovery helped make the program possible. Her encouragement and openness to rehabilitation initiatives have been instrumental in bringing this program to life.

The ceremony marked the first commencement of the REASON to HEAL Program, making this group the pioneering batch of the initiative. The program itself is a brainchild collaboration of JJVBMC and REASON Phils. Inc., both committed to making recovery more accessible to those who need it most.

More than a ceremony, the event was a celebration of second chances, healing, and hope, a reminder that with support, opportunity, and commitment, recovery is possible.

Addiction professionals: โ€˜You and I can healโ€™

MANY people struggle with substance abuse and dependence but some do not get any professional treatment because of the stigma surrounding addiction rehabilitation. For some, it is an embarrassing and unmentionable part of someoneโ€™s life; and for many, it is a punitive and coercive process inside rehabilitation facilities. But not to Joseph Jerry โ€œJayโ€ Valderrama who believes that getting help with their addiction is a positive and healthy decision to make. Jay once belonged to that stigma. His life was an open book in drug addiction. He started smoking at 12, tried ma*****na at 13, drowned himself with drugs up to his 30s, and submitted himself to a complete treatment in a rehabilitation center.

God touched his life is so many ways but he ignored them until one day he listened to that small voice inside his being. He wanted to change. So in that same rehab, he started as a volunteer. Soon he became the General Manager and the Addiction Program Director. He joined local and international trainings until he passed the exams and became an International Certified Addiction Professional (ICAP). For 19 years, Jay has been clean and sober. That was something impossible to imagine during those times when he was so hooked to drugs. Thanks to the treatment and his decision to change. Now, he wants to do more and apply what he thought of as a redeeming factor in his life. He wants to put a new face to the traditional treatment inside rehab facilities. He wants to share how he regained control of his life after deciding to change. Thus, the birth of J.J. Valderrama Behavioral Management Center (JJVBMC) located in Veloso St., Obrero, Davao City. With a team of addiction and healing professionals, Jay wants to introduce the value of outpatient treatment where the team will give premium to the ability and decisiveness of the person to change coupled with holistic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and motivational enhancement therapy. They believe that when a person understands his or her existence and pain, the motivation to change becomes intrinsic. They want to empower people, or commonly called as patients, to involve themselves in the community, in nature, in activities that will make them use their senses fully. Along with the treatment and therapy, they believe transformation becomes genuine and permanent. Healing comes from within intensified with their treatment and support. The Pew Research Center Statistics noted that substance use disorders are not just a criminal justice issue, but also a major public health concern. Addiction is a disease of the brain; it can be prevented, treated, and from which people can recover. This is where JJVBMC comes in to treat people, to make sure they recover and never to relapse, and to advocate, at the same time, the prevention of substance use. โ€œA center that heals. This is what we want to be known for,โ€ Jay, an accredited global trainer on Universal Treatment Curriculum Basic Level for Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme, said. One of the healing professionals is Dr. Raegan Joseph T. Villanueva who is involved in civic activities related to addiction field. As Chief Mental Health Officer, he uses multidisciplinary approach to treatment. โ€œWe focus on education, treatment, and research,โ€ Dr. Villanueva, who had his residency training at Southern Philippines Medical Center Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, said. With them is Dr. Emily Joy Mongcopa-Delgra as the Chief Clinical Psychologist. She is involved in clinical assessment, intervention designing and implementation which includes individual and group therapy, couple and family therapy, and forensic (court and church annulment cases). As member of the Technical Working Group of the Community-Based Rehabilitation and Aftercare Program of the City of Davao, she developed, implemented, and evaluated a psychotherapeutic intervention for incarcerated โ€œfemale drug peddlersโ€ at the Bureau of Management and Penology. Along with Jay, she believes that true healing comes from within. โ€œJourneying with the client means helping him or her nourish inner resources that will help him or her find more meaning in life,โ€ she said. Ronald Rivera is the Director of Business Development and Community Outreach. He has been volunteering in aftercare services in the addiction field. โ€œI commit to help clients find the appropriate psychological, sociological, and spiritual interventions that will pave way to individuality and healing,โ€ Rivera, a person in recovery since 2004, said. The center caters to consultation for substance use disorder. The Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) accredited physician, registered psychologist, and an ICAP will conduct screening, assessment, and drug dependency examination. It has Case Management where the team of professionals collaborate with the client to formulate the personalized treatment plan needed. But the center does not only cater to addiction problems. It provides psychological testing and consultation prior to carrying out any psychological interventions. It offers psychiatric evaluation and consultation. The center also offers consultation for Home-Based Management, Corporate Wellness Program, Community-Based Recovery Program, Student Assistance Program, substance-induced disorder, adolescent behavior problem, coupleโ€™s therapy, and family therapy. โ€œYou and I can heal. Let us sustain and celebrate life in recovery,โ€ Jay said.
