Today, the pioneering residents (Batch Ictus) of the Section of Adult Neurology successfully completed the course in ODISSeA (Organ Donation Innovative Strategies for Southeast Asia) held at Ateneo de Davao University.

This meaningful learning experience deepened our understanding of the neurologist’s important role in brain death determination, organ donation advocacy, and compassionate end-of-life care.

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Maria Therese Bad-ang, Dr. Brian Alvarez, a critical care specialist from Spain and a key figure in the ODISSeA project, and the SPMC SHARE Team for making this valuable training possible.

To serve well is not only to heal, but also to help life endure beyond loss.

Tonight's Morbidity and Mortality Conference was thoughtfully moderated by Dr. Katrina Bianca Mantos-Ocat and attended by Dr. Julie Ann Torres. More than a review of cases, the conference served as a valuable space for reflection, learning, and continued growth in our commitment to better patient care.

Through open discussion and shared insights, we are reminded that every experience—especially the difficult ones—offers lessons that help shape us into better physicians for our patients.

Locked and Blocked: A Case of Intracranial Tandem Occlusion 🧠

Last April 15, 2026, our department gathered for the grand rounds presentation of Dr. Romel Khan, YL3, moderated by Dr. Eleanor Chi-Ong. Centered on a patient who underwent mechanical thrombectomy, the discussion gave everyone an opportunity to reflect on the complexities of tandem occlusion and the value of timely, coordinated stroke care.

We are grateful to our colleagues from Vascular and Interventional Radiology—Dr. Tim Sanchez, Dr. Benj Ong, VIR fellows, and Radiology residents—for sharing their expertise and enriching the discussion. We also sincerely thank our consultants, Dr. Julie Ann Torres, Dr. Giannina Go-Ong, and Dr. Dorotheo Floresca, for joining us online and for their continued guidance and support.

Moments like these remind us that learning is always better when shared and that behind every case discussion is a collective desire to grow, and give our patients the care they deserve.

🧠When a Foot Lesion Meets a Posterior Fossa Syndrome: Unifying Syndrome or Coincidental Association?

A case that began with seemingly straightforward localization evolved into a deeper diagnostic challenge—asking whether every finding truly belongs to one unifying process, or whether some are simply coexisting clues along the way.

From cerebellar signs to systemic findings, this discussion reminded us that in neurology, diagnosis is not just about naming a disease, but about constantly refining our thinking as new evidence emerges.

Presented by Dr. Cyrille Enobio-Flores, under the brilliant guidance of our moderator, Dr. Dorotheo Floresca, Jr., MD, FPCP, FPNA, with the valuable presence of our colleagues from the Neurosurgery and Radiology departments.

We are also grateful to our online consultants, Dr. Julie Ann Torres and Dr. Giannina Krishna Go-Ong, for joining the discussion.

A meaningful session that highlighted the importance of localization, collaboration, and thoughtful diagnostic reasoning.

Even on Saturdays, learning and patient education continue in the Neurology Ward through our Watcher’s Class on Stroke Prevention and Post-Stroke Care.

Last March 14, 2026, our IM rotator, Dr. Dame Limabauan, facilitated the session, followed by another session on March 28, 2026 led by our Adjunct, Dr. Michael Angelo Lim, together with our YL2 resident, Dr. Christian Lacorte.

These meaningful activities help empower watchers and families with practical knowledge on post-stroke care and recovery, reminding us that healing continues not only through treatment, but also through education, support, and shared understanding.

Thank you to our doctors for making these sessions informative and valuable for our patients and their loved ones.

To supplement our learnings and further strengthen our foundation in neurology, SPMC Adult Neurology held a Didactics session on the Neuroanatomy of Cerebral Cortex last March 31, 2026, with our Asst. Training Officer, Dr. Julie Anne Torres, and with Dr. Flores as presenter.

It was another meaningful learning experience that helped us deepen our understanding of cortical anatomy, function, and localization—core concepts that continue to guide us in clinical practice.

Thank you Dr. Torres for the continued guidance and support in our training.
