For more than 50 years, the Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) Davao Chapter has contributed the growing awareness of many people in the promotion of mental health and prevention of mental disorders in the city of Davao. It has planted a seed in hard and rough soil and surmounted all difficulties, problems, obstacles present in its formative years. The seed sprouted grew tall, strong and tough, nurtured and strengthen by its gardeners (Board of Management) by their guiding principles, enthusiasm and their lofty dreams, ideas and visions. Now it can be said proudly that PMHA is an organization that is respected and well-placed in the niche of history.
Thru sheer effort, conscientious hard work persistent follow Ms. Josefina Gonzalez, Executive National Secretary organized PMHA Davao on August 22, 1960 with Mr. Desiderio Dalisay as the First Chairman of the Board. It was formally organized at Davao Puericulture Center. Programs were prepared, opening remarks, talks, speeches, intermission numbers were rendered of the participating schools. The event were participated by public school teachers, government employees and prominent citizens from all walks of life in the city of Davao.
After the two-year term of Mr. Dalisay, it was followed by Dr. Manuel Babao from 1962-1966 who was a man of firm character who took up the challenge. Under his leadership many members were recruited, public officials, forums, symposia, seminars on the importance of mental health. In 1969-1993, Mrs. Soledad R. Duterte took over the chairmanship. In her 24 years of being the Chairman of the Board, innovations for promotion of mental health were undertaken. In 1975, the youth council for mental health was organized in different schools and in January 20, 1975, milestone in history of PMHA was the opening of Friendship center in Davao City. The clinic serves as intermediate level between community and mental hospital.
