MANILA, Philippines — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) late Wednesday said it uncovered violations in the sale, handling, and distribution of anti-rabies vaccines, following the death of an eight-year-old patient from rabies.

These kiddos had their Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) anti-rabies vaccine today.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children living in highly endemic regions should receive PrEP anti-rabies vaccine.

Why give PrEP to children?

❗Children are at particular risk because of their playful nature.

❗Children are unable to protect themselves when they are attacked by dogs and cats.

❗Children playing outdoors are particularly vulnerable to dog bites since unvaccinated community dogs are commonly observed on the streets and on or around public and school playgrounds.

❗Children may not report animal bites to their parents or may delay reporting of bites.

Benefits of PrEP -

✅ Re-exposures are very common in childhood but if a child has previously received PrEP, there will be no need for RIG which is costly and may not always be available.

✅ Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) regimen is reduced to two doses only.
