A Night of Legacy and Leadership: Rotary Club of South Davao’s 58th Installation and Handover Ceremonies

On the evening of July 11, 2025, the Rotary Club of South Davao marked yet another historic milestone with its 58th Installation and Handover Ceremonies, held at the elegant Social Hall of The Residences at Azuela Cove.

Anchored on the theme “Unite for Good,” the evening unfolded as a seamless narrative of gratitude, transition, and renewed commitment to service above self. Members, dignitaries, and honored guests gathered not only to witness a change in leadership but to celebrate the enduring spirit of Rotary—where service meets purpose, and tradition meets progress.

The night began with a warm fellowship dinner, paving the way for a formal call to order by outgoing President Michael Chellathurai. A solemn invocation and the singing of the national anthem and Rotary Hymn reminded everyone of the higher calling that unites all Rotarians in service.

PP Emmanuel E. Villa-Abrille delivered the welcome address, followed by the introduction of dignitaries and guests by PP Virgie P. Albaera. A special recognition was given to the PHF Donors and members of the Continuing Polio Plus Society, a reminder that our impact grows when generosity is matched with action.

President Michael then delivered his Valedictory Address, “The Year That Was,” offering heartfelt reflections on a year defined by purpose, progress, and perseverance.

Adding cultural depth to the evening, the Kaliwat Performing Artists Collective captivated the audience with an Ata Manobo Courtship Dance, a vibrant tribute to our region’s indigenous heritage and a celebration of unity in diversity.

The ceremonial heart of the evening was the installation of incoming President Sonja V. Garcia. Introduced by PDDG Arthur C. Uy, she was formally charged and inducted by PDG Salvador A. Angala and DG Angel G. Fernandez, Jr. The symbolic turnover of the Rotary gavel signified the trust and responsibility now bestowed upon her capable hands. In her Acceptance Speech, Pres. Sonja spoke with clarity, compassion, and conviction—laying out her vision for a Rotary year guided by unity, excellence, and collective action.

A musical interlude from PP Virgie Albaera softened the mood before the induction of new officers, directors, members, and the Rotaract, led by PDG Reynaldo I. Reyes, PAG May Divino, and PP Antonio B. Partoza, Jr. This marked a renewed pledge of leadership and service across all levels of the club.

A soul-stirring Serenata by Sec. Exequiel Tomines Jr. prefaced the introduction of our Guest of Honor, AG Bai Hundra Cassandra Dominique N. Advincula, whose presence brought depth and dignity to the affair. DG Angel G. Fernandez, Jr. then delivered a rousing inspirational message—urging all to move forward with courage, unity, and purpose.

As a gesture of appreciation, Pres. Sonja presented a token to our guest speaker, followed by a ceremonial toast led by PP Ismael D. Tabije, sealing the night with camaraderie and celebration.

To conclude the program, Kaliwat returned for a final performance—Sambi Sa Malong—a graceful cultural expression symbolizing resilience and grace, echoing the very values Rotary stands for.

This night was not just an event; it was a tapestry of stories, leadership, and commitment woven together in the spirit of Rotary. With new leadership at the helm and a dedicated membership standing firm, the Rotary Club of South Davao looks ahead—united for good, committed to service, and ready to make the next chapter even greater than the last.

Here’s to a meaningful and impactful Rotary Year!

Yes, blood donation can be beneficial for both the recipient and the donor. For the donor, it can provide a free health checkup, potentially reduce the risk of heart disease, and even help with weight management. For the recipient, it provides life-saving blood for transfusions, which are crucial in surgeries, trauma care, and treatment of various medical conditions.
Benefits for the donor:
Free health checkup:
Donating blood includes a mini-physical and blood testing for potential diseases, offering valuable insights into the donor's health.
Reduced risk of heart disease:
Blood donation can lower blood viscosity (thickness), improving blood flow and reducing strain on the heart, potentially lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Iron regulation:
Regular blood donation helps maintain healthy iron levels in the body, as excessive iron can contribute to oxidative stress and inflammation, both linked to heart disease.
Calorie burning:
Donating a pint of blood can burn a significant number of calories (around 650) as the body works to replenish the lost blood volume.
Improved cardiovascular health:
By reducing blood thickness and potentially lowering blood pressure, donation can contribute to better cardiovascular health.
Potential detoxification benefits:
Some studies suggest that blood donations may help lower levels of certain harmful chemicals in the body.
Sense of purpose:
Knowing that the donation can save lives provides a sense of altruism and can be psychologically beneficial.
Benefits for the recipient:
Life-saving transfusions:
Blood transfusions are essential for surgeries, trauma care, and treatment of various illnesses and blood disorders.
Improved quality of life:
Blood transfusions can improve the quality of life for patients with chronic conditions like thalassemia.
