During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) served as the primary referral hospital for patients with COVID-19 in Davao City. In 2020, SPMC had admitted about 5,050 COVID-19 cases. Despite this, a comprehensive profile of pediatric patients diagnosed with COVID-19 remains lacking. Understanding their demographic and clinical characteristics is essential, given the unique physiological and immunological factors influencing disease susceptibility and severity in children.

The SPMC Institute of Emergency, Acute, Trauma, and Critical Care provides rapid, coordinated, and life-saving interventions to enhance patient safety and well-being. It leads efforts to reduce trauma-related mortality and morbidity through comprehensive, evidence-based care from pre-hospital to intensive care. The institutionalization of emergency trauma and critical care in 2022, as recognized by the Society for the Surgery of Trauma under the Philippine College of Surgeons, has led to the establishment of several key initiatives.

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) identifies congenital hearing loss in infants by assessing the nerve-to-midbrain auditory pathway.

Among healthy infants aged 3-6 months who underwent ABR using the Interacoustics Eclipse EP15 apparatus, normative absolute latency ranges for waves I, II, and III were 1.19-1.78 msec, 3.81-5.10 msec, and 6.12-7.17 msec, respectively, while normative interpeak latency ranges for waves I-III, III-V, and I-V were 2.36-3.23 msec, 1.78-2.61 msec, and 4.41-5.57 msec, respectively.

Establishing equipment-specific ABR normative values is crucial due to variability in devices, stimuli, and patient age.
