Hi duchess, I'm Dr. Santillan-Sumugat ๐Ÿ˜Š

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition characterized by the darkening of patches of skin, which occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin. This condition can affect people of all skin types and ages, and while it usually harmless, it can be a source of emotional distress for many individuals.

There are several types of hyperpigmentation including:

1. Melasma- a common skin condition that causes brown or gray patches to appear on the face, usually on the cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip. It is more common in women and is often associated with hormonal changes, such a pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives.

2. Age Spots/ Sun Spots (Solar Lentigines) - these are darkened spots on the skin caused by prolonged exposure to ultravaiolet (UV) rays from the sun. They are more common in areas that are frequently exposed to sunlight, such as face, hands, and arms.

3. Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)- this type of hyperpigmentation occurs after an injury of inflammation of the skin, such as acne, eczema, or a cut. It is more common in people with darker skin tones and can persist for months or even years after the initial injury has healed.

Hyperpigmentation can be triggered by a variety of factors, including sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, and certain medications.
