AI-generated flood situation maps for and are now up at https://hazardhunter.georisk.gov.ph.

These show flooded areas that were identified by an artificial intelligence model from satellite images.

Satellite images need to be calibrated and validated. This is where OpenStreetMap (OSM) comes in.

Initiated by MapBeks, 2 new URGENT OSM tasks on Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) Tasking Manager are launched and they need help in mapping builtup areas in Quezon Province, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur for Typhoon . Data that will be generated can help in the disaster response to identify the location of remote communities.

Satellites that orbit several hundreds of kilometers from the Earth cannot “see” viruses but they can be used to detect valuable “proxies” or indicators that help build models for enabling effective response, monitoring and even prediction. As infectious diseases emerge from localized places or clusters and spread through physical transmission pathways, satellites can support the modeling of outbreak occurrence and spread by providing relevant geospatial data that span large geographical swaths at high resolution and regular frequency. As such, they are becoming an indispensable tool in pandemic response.

Today's Science History Milestone: On August 22, 1875, British physicist William Eccles was born. He is considered a pioneer in the development of radio communications technology. He also co-patented the flip-flop circuit, which became the basis of electronic memory in computers.

TODAY'S SCIENCE TRIVIA: There are six cloud rat species (and two dwarf cloud rat species) that are native to the Philippines. All of them are either threatened or endangered, and the Dinagat bushy-tailed cloud rat (𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘺𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴) is considered the rarest and most elusive of them all.

Long feared extinct, researchers unexpectedly rediscovered the 2.5-foot-long rodent in 2012, nearly four decades after its first appearance on an island northeast of Mindanao.
