Mr. Jebsen Gamido Speaks on HIV Awareness Among Seafarers at ALON Concert I Positibong Marino Founder and Executive Director calls for compassion, awareness, and action in maritime health
Manila, Philippines — During the much-celebrated ALON Concert, held in honor of Filipino seafarers, Mr. Jebsen Gamido, Founder and Executive Director of Positibong Marino, delivered a powerful and eye-opening speech on the urgent need to address HIV awareness and support within the maritime industry.
Gamido highlighted a 500% increase in new HIV cases among Filipino youth, referencing Department of Health data comparing 13 new daily cases in 2010 to 57 per day in 2025. While the figures may be alarming, he reminded the crowd that these numbers have been climbing for years—what’s alarming, he emphasized, is how little has changed in response.
“Viral ang balita. Senyales ito na maraming gustong makilahok sa usaping HIV. Maraming gustong maliwanagan sa mga misconceptions,” Gamido said.
He pointed out that a significant number of new cases involve migrant workers and seafarers, urging the maritime sector to recognize HIV not just as a medical concern, but as a labor rights, occupational health, and public health issue.
Through Positibong Marino, Gamido and his team have supported hundreds of Filipino seafarers across various ranks and vessel types. He shared inspiring stories of seafarers living with HIV who are now working again onboard—proof that a diagnosis is not the end, but a new beginning when supported with proper treatment and dignity.
He underscored five critical takeaways during his speech:
-HIV is no longer a death sentence—treatment works.
-Undetectable = Untransmissible (U=U)—seafarers living with HIV can have partners and children safely.
-HIV testing should be normalized as part of self-care.
-Seafarers with HIV can still work onboard—some companies uphold workplace non-discrimination policies.
-Everyone has a role to play—onboard, at home, or in the office.
“Ang tanong ko lang: What will you do?” Gamido concluded—leaving a message that echoed with the entire audience.
The ALON Concert, attended by thousands of seafarers, families, and maritime stakeholders, became more than just a celebration—it became a platform for education, empowerment, and hope.
Jebsen Gamido, through Positibong Marino, continues to be a leading voice in advocating for the rights and dignity of seafarers living with HIV - reminding everyone that with support, there is always hope at sea.
