Q: Why is glaucoma called the "silent thief of sight"?

A: Glaucoma is often termed the "silent thief of sight" because it typically progresses without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs. It involves damage to the optic nerve, often due to increased eye pressure. Regular eye examinations are essential for early detection and management to prevent irreversible vision loss.

Did you know that Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness in older adults, actually has two forms? 🤔

90% of cases are the "dry" form, which may have no symptoms at first. Dry AMD affects vision as light-sensitive cells slowly break down with age. 👴 However, "wet" AMD is more severe and often develops from pre-existing dry AMD⚠️

Find out more from the diagram above ☝ Your risk of AMD increases with age, family history, smoking, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. ❤️‍🩹

If you know someone who might be at risk, encourage them to get regular eye exams! Early diagnosis is key to preventing blindness 🔑

My husband, Daryle Jason G. Yu and I, are both alumni of Silliman University Medical School, Dumaguete City. In 2016, we left the comfort of the city to pursue our 3-year Ophthalmology Residency Training in Metro Manila. During our senior year of training, we were both given a great privilege to serve as Chief Residents in our respective training institutions and graduated last December 31, 2019 from East Avenue Medical Center and Cardinal Santos Medical Center, respectively. After passing both written and practical component of the board certifying examinations, we were conferred as Diplomates in the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology last August 11, 2019. We were then fortunate to undergo further training as Clinical Research Fellows at the Singapore Eye Research Institute/Singapore National Eye Centre; Jason in Myopia & Glaucoma, and I in Retina, respectively.

Filled with much enthusiasm, we are starting a new chapter in our career as clinicians and we look forward to working closely with local optometrists and ophthalmologists in this beautiful City of Gentle People, as partners in rendering eye care services in the region.

In these challenging times, we are one with the city in maintaining a high level of vigilance and social responsibility to keep our patients safe. Wishing everyone good health and safety as we go through 2020 and the next year together. Cheers!
