It is important to note that terms and phrases like "living with AIDS" and "I am HIV positive" have been extremely empowering to many people living with HIV, while for others, these terms may not describe their experience, or may feel stigmatizing. That is okay; words and language mean different things to different people and at different times in their lives. Testing is the first and most critical step in reducing Mother - to - Child transmission. Knowing her status, an expectant mother can receive the essential treatment that will protect her health and the health of her baby.

𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩
Prenatal treatment for HIV positive expectant mothers can protect their babies from HIV by drastically reducing the risk of Mother - to - Child transmission. Antiretroviral therapy and education services have been proven to significantly reduce the risk of transmission to their infants.

𝙎𝙖𝙛𝙚 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙗𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙝
Safe childbirth is an important consideration for any expectant mother, yet many women lack access to proper facilities. Hence we need to ensure women have access to prenatal care and safe place for delivery.

𝙎𝙖𝙛𝙚 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜
Safe breastfeeding can greatly reduce the risk of HIV transmission from mother to child through breast milk. Exclusive breastfeeding and antiretroviral (ARV) medicines can protect infants from infection.

𝙀𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝙄𝙣𝙛𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙏𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜
Early infant testing can measure a child’s HIV status in the first few months of life. As a result, HIV negative children can have access to treatment.

Only certain body fluids from a person who has HIV can transmit HIV. These fluids include
◽ blood
◽semen (cum)
◽pre-seminal fluid (pre-cum)
◽rectal fluids
◽va**nal fluids
◽breast milk

These fluids must come in contact with a mucous membrane or damaged tissue or be directly injected into the bloodstream (from a needle or syringe) for transmission to occur. Mucous membranes are found inside the re**um, va**na, p***s, and mouth.

You might have already heard about how important it is to know your status to help end HIV transmissions, and you might have also heard about how easy it is to know your status with rapid HIV testing.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once.

People with certain risk factors should get tested more often. You should get tested at least once a year if:

◽ You’re a man who has had s*x with
another man.
◽ You’ve had a**l or va**nal s*x with
someone who has HIV.
◽ You’ve had more than one s*x partner
since your last HIV test.
◽ You’ve shared needles, syringes, or other
drug injection equipment (for example,
cookers).
◽ You’ve exchanged s*x for drugs or
money.
◽ You’ve been diagnosed with or treated
for another s*xually transmitted
disease.
◽ You’ve been diagnosed with or treated
for hepatitis or tuberculosis (TB).
◽ You’ve had s*x with someone who has
done anything listed above or with
someone whose s*xual history you don’t
know.

However many guys still don’t get tested often enough, and this might be the case for a number of reasons. Let’s take a look at what might be keeping them from getting a test.

Paige Rawl was 12 years old when she told her best friend that she has HIV. She’s had the virus since birth — her mother unknowingly contracted it from her father, who eventually left the family.

"𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦," Rawl, now a college student.

"𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘐 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦."

Those reactions were devastating. Paige’s admission quickly spread through her Indianapolis middle school. Rawl’s schoolmates — even her friends — responded by mocking and ostracizing her. They refused to use the water fountain after her — afraid they’d get the disease, too. She was beat up and called names. Rawl went to the school counselor for help. Her advice to Rawl? Tell her friends that she didn’t have HIV after all.

"𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘥," Rawl said. "𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘨𝘰 𝘵𝘰."

The last straw came when a soccer coach at the school asked Rawl about her condition in front of the entire team.

"𝘔𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩," Rawl said. "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘢 𝘫𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘏𝘐𝘝 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘴."

Rawl withdrew from school and was homeschooled until college.

Knowing that "Undetectable Equals Untransmittable" (U=U) can be life-changing for people living with HIV and their relationships. This proves that they are not disease carriers and that they can be touched and loved. Many people living with HIV continue to experience institutional and personal stigma and prejudice. As a result, many avoid s*xual or nons*xual connections because they are afraid of transmitting HIV.

The following are the ways on how to achieve U=U status:
🧪 Adhere to your Medications
🧪 Always talk to infectious doctor (ID)
🧪 Eat nutritious food
🧪 Avoid stress
🧪 Build your own support system
🧪 Don’t lose your faith

𝗬𝗢𝗨 might be wondering how you can address an issue as complex as HIV stigma. If each one of us commits on making positive changes to our families and communities, we can help end HIV stigma and work to stop HIV together.

When talking about HIV, certain words and language may have a negative meaning for people at high risk for HIV or those who have HIV. We can do our part to stop HIV stigma by being intentional and thoughtful when choosing our words, and choosing to use supportive—rather than stigmatizing— language when talking about HIV.

Some people with HIV feel that these terms imply that they are powerless, with no control over their lives. Other unhelpful terms negatively define people with HIV by the condition. These terms also segregate the people who have HIV. But, AGAIN a person is not HIV or AIDS. A person lives with HIV once he or she gets the virus or progresses to having an AIDS diagnosis.

There so much ways on what we can do to make a big difference in everyone's life. Remember AIDS itself is not a condition. It is a range of conditions, or a syndrome, that occurs when a person’s immune system is weakened by the HIV infection. Make a stand today and let your tingog be heard. HIV infection itself has 𝗡𝗢 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗖 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗣𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗦. Therefore, a person may already be infected with HIV even if he/she looks physically healthy. The only way to know if a person has HIV is to get an 𝗛𝗜𝗩 𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧.

Knowing one's HIV status early on is very important. This can only be done through HIV testing. If a person is diagnosed with HIV early and started on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) early, there is a higher chance that HIV has not yet destroyed the immune system of the body. This prolongs and improves the quality of
life of a person living with HIV.

𝗜𝗚𝗦𝗢𝗢𝗡, take a step 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗. Take
𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 and make decisions to 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧 getting and transmitting HIV.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 | 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗛𝗜𝗩 𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗜𝗧𝗦 𝗘𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗗𝗬

𝘼𝘾𝙐𝙏𝙀 𝙃𝙄𝙑 𝙄𝙉𝙁𝙀𝘾𝙏𝙄𝙊𝙉
Acute HIV infection is the earliest stage of HIV infection, and it usually appears 2 to 4 weeks after HIV infection. HIV multiplies rapidly and spreads throughout the body during the acute stage of infection. The virus attacks and destroys the immune system's infection-fighting CD4 cells (CD4 T lymphocytes). The level of HIV in the blood is very high during the acute HIV infection stage, which greatly increases the risk of HIV transmission.

Flu-like symptoms that lasts a few weeks include:
🧪 fever
🧪 chills
🧪 night sweats
🧪 diarrhea
🧪 headache
🧪 muscle aches
🧪 joint pain
🧪 sore throat
🧪 rash
🧪 swollen lymph glands
🧪 mouth or ge***al ulcers

𝘾𝙃𝙍𝙊𝙉𝙄𝘾 𝙃𝙄𝙑 𝙄𝙉𝙁𝙀𝘾𝙏𝙄𝙊𝙉
Chronic HIV infection is the second stage of HIV infection (also called asymptomatic HIV infection or clinical latency). HIV continues to multiply in the body during this stage, but at a very low level.

This can lead to symptoms like:
🧪 fatigue
🧪 shortness of breath
🧪 cough
🧪 fever
🧪 swollen lymph nodes
🧪 weight loss
🧪 diarrhea

𝘼𝘾𝙌𝙐𝙄𝙍𝙀𝘿 𝙄𝙈𝙈𝙐𝙉𝙊𝘿𝙀𝙁𝙄𝘾𝙄𝙀𝙉𝘾𝙔 𝙑𝙄𝙍𝙐𝙎 (𝘼𝙄𝘿𝙎)
When HIV infection progresses to AIDS, the body becomes vulnerable to serious diseases. People with advanced HIV/AIDS seem to be more likely to catch a variety of infections, including cytomegalovirus, a herpes virus. It can cause problems on your eyes, lungs, and digestive tract.

AIDS is the most severe form of HIV infection. Because HIV has severely weakened the immune system, the body is unable to combat serious infections.

𝘊𝘈𝘙𝘋𝘐𝘖-𝘗𝘜𝘓𝘔𝘖𝘕𝘈𝘙𝘠 𝘚𝘠𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘔
🧪 People with advanced HIV are vulnerable to tuberculosis, pneumonia, and a disease known as pneumocystis carinii pneumonia if they do not receive preventive treatment (P*P).

𝘊𝘌𝘕𝘛𝘙𝘈𝘓 𝘕𝘌𝘙𝘝𝘖𝘜𝘚 𝘚𝘠𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘔
🧪 Although HIV does not directly infect nerve cells, it does infect the cells that support and surround nerves in the brain and throughout the body.

𝘋𝘐𝘎𝘌𝘚𝘛𝘐𝘝𝘌 𝘚𝘠𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘔
🧪 A common HIV-related infection is called candidiasis. Symptoms include inflammation of and a white film on the tongue.

𝘐𝘕𝘛𝘌𝘎𝘜𝘔𝘌𝘕𝘛𝘈𝘙𝘠 𝘚𝘠𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘔
🧪 A viral skin infection called molluscum contagiosum involves an outbreak of bumps on the skin. Another condition is called prurigo nodularis. It causes crusted lumps on the skin, as well as severe itching.

We know a lot about how HIV is transmitted from person to person. Having safer s*x means you take this into account and avoid risky practices. There are two reasons to practice safer s*x: 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 and 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀.

𝙋𝙍𝙊𝙏𝙀𝘾𝙏𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙔𝙊𝙐𝙍𝙎𝙀𝙇𝙁
If you have HIV, you need to protect your health. When it comes to s*x, this means practicing safer s*x (like using condoms) to avoid s*xually transmitted diseases (STDs). HIV makes it harder for your body to fight off diseases. Remember, "what might be a small health problem for someone without HIV could be big health problem for you."

𝙋𝙍𝙊𝙏𝙀𝘾𝙏𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙔𝙊𝙐𝙍 𝙋𝘼𝙍𝙏𝙉𝙀𝙍
Taking care of others means making sure that you do not pass HIV or any other s*xually transmitted infections to them.

"Being safe" usually means protecting yourself and others by using condoms for the highest-risk s*x activities, specifically for a**l and va**nal s*x. Be 𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗘𝗗. Be 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗘. 𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗚𝗠𝗔 𝗡𝗢𝗪.
