Congratulations to Dr. Fob Ian P. Sy with co-authorship from Dr. Rodolfo R. Jandoc Jr. and Dr. Abigail F. Rondina with co-authorship from Dr. Lorenzo S. Serillo Jr. for their presentations during the 2nd Philippine Society of General Surgeons Philippine Association of Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgeons joint convention.

Dr. Fob presented a paper on appendiceal diverticulitis, a rare condition that mimics its less severe counterpart, acute appendicitis. The presented case of the patient highlighted the importance of considering appendiceal diverticulitis when it comes to the differential diagnosis of right lower quadrant abdominal pain.

Meanwhile, Dr. Abigail presented a paper on a rare case of intestinal lymphoma arising from T-cells. Given how intestinal T-cell lymphoma is an uncommon and poorly understood clinical condition already, the case highlighted the need for clinicians to consider T-cell lymphomas in the differential diagnosis of unexplained intestinal perforation.

These papers aim to ultimately highlight the considerations of more uncommon diagnoses because early intervention could mean the preservation of a life. Congratulations to our surgical residents, Dr. Fob and Dr. Abigail, and their mentors, Dr. Rodolfo R. Jandoc Jr. and Dr. Lorenzo S. Serillo Jr., for shedding light on ways to save a life.

Personalized medicine—or Precision Oncology—is no longer just a distant vision for cancer care. Around the world, it is transforming how tumors are diagnosed and treated, tailoring therapies to the unique genetic profile of each patient. For Dr. Jonathan P. Rivera, a pathologist specializing in Head and Neck & Thyroid Pathology, bringing this approach to Filipino patients is both a professional mission and a personal calling.

Dr. Rivera trained at Taipei Veterans General Hospital from 2023 to 2024, where he met his mentor and eventual co-author, Dr. Jen-Fan Hang. Together, they published a landmark paper in the American Journal of Surgical Pathology and presented their findings at the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) meeting.

Their study, “Multifocal Papillary Thyroid Carcinomas With Discordant Molecular Drivers: Emphasizing the Morphology and Collision Tumors,” underscored a crucial reality: not all tumors in the same patient are biologically identical. In some cases, multiple thyroid tumors may each carry different genetic drivers—meaning that a “one-size-fits-all” treatment approach simply won’t work.
This approach highlights the genetic uniqueness of each patient and how it can be used to navigate their treatment.

Molecular testing is at the heart of this shift. By identifying the specific mutations in each tumor, clinicians can deploy highly targeted drugs—the so-called “magic bullets”—that selectively destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy tissues. This is particularly valuable for patients with multiple tumors, as each can be addressed individually for optimal outcomes.

Unfortunately, the Philippines lags behind in adopting molecular diagnostics for cancer. While such testing is routine in many countries, local access remains limited, forcing many patients to send samples abroad—a process that is often expensive, time-consuming, and logistically challenging.

To bridge this gap, Dr. Rivera has explored Next-Generation Immunohistochemical (IHC) stains as a more practical alternative. Unlike traditional molecular testing, these advanced stains are faster, more affordable, and already available in many Philippine laboratories. By applying them strategically, pathologists can approximate genetic classification without the delays and costs of overseas testing.

Dr. Rivera envisions a future where every Filipino cancer patient benefits from tumor-level genetic profiling—where the pathologist’s report not only diagnose the cancer based on how they look under the microscope, but also maps its molecular blueprint, guiding clinicians to the most effective, personalized treatment plan, making personalized cancer care the standard and not the exception

At Silliman University Medical Center, we take pride in shaping future leaders in healthcare and ministry. After ten weeks of learning, reflection, and service, the latest batch of Clinical Pastoral Education trainees at SUMC has successfully completed their training on August 6, 2025!

Part of the Enhanced Pastoral Training Program of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) and the Silliman University Divinity School, this journey has equipped them with deeper compassion, spiritual insight, and readiness to serve.
We rejoice with them and pray that their ministries continue to bring hope and healing wherever God calls them. 🙏💙

𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝘁!

We are an institution, not just of medical talent, but of musical talent as well. In collaboration with DOH for the hospital week celebration, SUMC hosted what seems to be a recurring competition. Music lives at the heart of SUMC and in the hearts of its constituents, which is why five competitors came in prepared for an epic musical battle. Five singers, a rakista, a balladeer whose eternal song is his muse, a birit queen, a songbird, and a theatre kid willing to defy gravity.

One chance and one winner! Dr. Rowena Marie Tulang-Samares, Chairperson of the Board of Judges, Helian Y. Godes, and Dr. Gwyn R. Bacay were the members of the council that decided the fate of the five competitors. Before the competition, Dr. Bacay reminded everyone what all this was for. “There is no better gauge of a healthy workplace than its healthy workers. This National Hospital Week, let us redefine ‘strong.’ Strength is building a workplace where all of us thrive.”

And thrive we did! From the five different hospital factions, we had Jansen A. Coronado for Medical Services, Jessie Herbert A. Cantere for Nursing Services, Raffy M. Gregana for Hospital Operations and Support Services, Jonalyn A. Veñales for Financial Services, and Farrah Jane I. Macabinguil for Patient Services. Backed by the support of their peers, the West Solarium was filled to the brim with camaraderie between coworkers and friends. At SUMC, we nourish worker health in every way we can, including talents and passions that heal beyond the physical.

In the end, our winner was the balladeer whose eternal song is his muse, Jessie Herbert A. Cantere, complete with flowers given to him mid-performance by said muse. A close second was the theatre kid who dared to defy gravity, Jansen A. Coronado. And in third place was the lovely birit queen, Ms. Jonalyn A. Veñales, who was only a 5-day-old employee when the competition took place.

With an energetic intermission number by the Clinical Laboratory Staff, a closing violin performance by Leonard Cyren O. Ligutom, and an even more energetic after-zumba workout when the competition was over, the celebration was a wonderful success.

With our hearts set in song, we hope that we continue to prove that the Silliman University Medical Center is a place where we look after employee health and wellbeing. We aim to always be an Occupational Safety and Health Hospital, or OSHpital for short!

Silliman University Medical Center takes pride in its commitment to motherhood, which is why we were honored to host the 1st anniversary of the Association of Mother's Milk Advocates (AMoMA), in line with this year’s World Breastfeeding Month theme: “𝑃𝑟𝑖o𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖ze 𝐵𝑟e𝑎𝑠𝑡fee𝑑𝑖𝑛g: 𝐶𝑟e𝑎𝑡e 𝑆𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑏𝑙e 𝑆𝑢𝑝𝑝o𝑟𝑡 𝑆𝑦𝑠𝑡e𝑚𝑠.”⁣⁣⁣

In partnership with the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡, we held a 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 at the Pantejo Garden Chapel alongside AMoMA’s celebration. Attendees included representatives from the DOH, Provincial and City Health Offices, Community Primary Hospitals, and Private Hospitals.⁣⁣⁣

Guest speaker 𝐃𝐫. 𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐔𝐲𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐑𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬, a practicing dermatologist, shared her heartfelt journey as a breastfeeding mother, describing it as an experience of “love, comfort, and connection.” She emphasized that breast milk is the best gift one can give to their children—a reflection of her deep commitment as a mother who prioritized expressing milk at work for her daughters.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
As we continue to champion breastfeeding, we invite mothers and their support systems to connect with AMoMA through 𝐒𝐔𝐌𝐂 𝐀𝐌𝐨𝐌𝐀 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤. The group also holds monthly Mother’s Classes every third Saturday—a safe space to learn, share, and find support.

A beautiful memorial service was held at the Rev. Dr. Edmundo A. Pantejo Garden Chapel to honor the life of his beloved wife, 𝐌𝐫𝐬. 𝐎𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚-𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐣𝐨—affectionately known as 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐞 or 𝐌𝐚’𝐚𝐦 𝐎𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐞. The garden chapel, a gift of love she herself envisioned and helped bring to life, was filled with family, friends, and many whose lives she had touched—some profoundly changed by her quiet acts of kindness.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Rev. Hope C. Rambuyon opened the service with a poignant reflection: though grief can feel overwhelming, we are never alone in our sorrow. With this reassurance, those closest to Ma’am Ophie took to the podium and spoke with deep affection, allowing their tributes to fill the chapel with love—just as she once filled their lives.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
They remembered 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞—𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭-𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐧, 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝. That same attentiveness shaped every detail of the chapel she helped create. From the carefully chosen design to the swan emblem etched on the front steps, every element reflected her desire for peace, healing, and sacred space.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Her thoughtfulness extended even to how she dressed. Known for her fondness for new dresses, she would often be asked why. She would recall a memory from her youth during the Japanese occupation, when she had only one dress to wear for an entire year—washing it daily and waiting for it to dry in the sun. Her daughter, BJ, shared how that early deprivation shaped a lasting appreciation for clothing and a lighthearted love for shopping—a gentle reminder of her resilience and joy in life’s small pleasures.⁣⁣⁣

A Morning Devotion in celebration of the National Hospital Week

Although a usual occurrence every Wednesday at SUMC Pantejo Garden Chapel, this Wednesday was just a bit more special with the National Hospital Week Celebration, aptly themed “Hospital: A Healthy Workplace For All Sa Bagong Pilipinas.” Boasting a full house, with doors open to accommodate the attendees stretching back as far as the fountain, the Wednesday morning devotion was livelier than usual.

The devotion itself led with the theme “Faithfulness in the Healing Mission,” with President and CEO, Ms. Fredita R. Tan, handling the words of welcome and reminding us at the very start of the service how a healthy workforce equals a healthy workplace.

Echoing Ms. Tan’s sentiment later on in the service, Director Norman L. Ramiro emphasized the importance of workplace culture. With his moving words, he addressed everyone present by their specific roles, from Board members to house staff to frontliners and everyone in between, reminding them to lead with kindness and humility.

And after another beautiful number by the honeyed voices of the Quizo Family Quintet, the speaker of the day gave a powerful message that highlighted our very own institutional history. An active consultant here at SUMC, Dr. Walden Ursos, speaks of the journey of our institution, headed by individuals of faith who were devoted to putting patients first. An individual Dr. Ursos called our attention to was Dr. Jose "Tatang" S. Garcia, a foundational name in SUMC for rendering his services to his country during the Japanese occupation, and someone who has personally recommended Dr. Ursos for a scholarship that changed the course of his life. Dr. Ursos reminds us that “All of us have a role to play,” and we can work together towards growth founded in faith.

In loving memory of Mrs. Ophelia Recla-Pantejo.

Mrs. Ophelia Pantejo was the gracious benefactor behind the Rev. Dr. Edmundo A. Pantejo Garden Chapel. Her generosity made it possible for this sacred space to become a source of comfort and peace for many.

The chapel has served as a quiet sanctuary for patients and their families—offering healing, hope, and strength during some of life’s most challenging moments.

It has also provided a safe and peaceful refuge for our staff, allowing them a space to pause, reflect, and recharge.

Moreover, it continues to play a vital role in supporting Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) trainings, nurturing those who are called to serve in spiritual care.

SUMC is deeply grateful and honored to be a recipient of Mrs. Pantejo’s kindness. Her legacy of compassion lives on through the many lives touched by this chapel. Her memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
