In celebration of National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Day on July 17, 2025, the instructors of the Silliman University Medical Center Life Support International Training Center (SUMC-LSITC) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) joined the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) in conducting a Hands-Only CPR training at the Amlan basketball court. This annual activity is part of PHA’s ongoing effort to raise public awareness about the importance of CPR. It aims to empower bystanders to act quickly and confidently during cardiac arrest, ultimately increasing the chances of survival for victims outside of a hospital setting.

The event was led by Dr. Karen Mae L. Arboleda-Sayson, a dedicated member of the PHA Council on CPR. Also present were Dr. Silahis O. Rosario and Dr. Kenneth T. Coo, with Dr. Coo representing One Rescue. Their participation helped emphasize the value of teamwork among healthcare professionals, volunteers, and emergency responders in building a more prepared community. The training was made possible through the support of One Rescue, the Philippine National Red Cross, and Silliman University Medical Center—organizations that have long been dedicated to promoting CPR awareness and enhancing community-based emergency response. Their active involvement underscores a shared commitment to saving lives by empowering the public with essential, life-saving skills.

The Silliman University Medical Center Dietary Department, in collaboration with Human Resources Department, celebrated National Nutrition Month on July 16, 2025, at the SUMC Solarium, with the theme: “Sa Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN): Sama-sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat!” and the supporting message: “Food and Nutrition Security, Maging Priority! Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin!”

The event was vibrant and engaging, with both employees and patients participating enthusiastically. The nutrition quiz became a fun, collaborative experience as staff and patients worked together to answer questions, fostering a spirit of teamwork and shared learning. Real-time feedback enhanced the activity, helping everyone build stronger awareness around proper nutrition and healthy habits.

As part of its commitment to wellness and sustainability, SUMC also showcased fresh, healthy produce harvested from its off-site facility in Balili, Sibulan. A variety of locally grown items—including table bananas, cassava, pechay, and other nutritious crops—were made available. Fresh buko was served on-site, while fertilized soil and other eco-friendly products were offered for sale, reinforcing the Hospital’s dedication to health, sustainability, and supporting local agriculture.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to the success of this celebration. Let’s continue working together for a healthier, more nourished community.

On July 14, 2025, the SUMC Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (MBFHI) Committee spearheaded a Stakeholders Collaboration Meeting on Strengthening Breastfeeding Practices. The gathering brought together representatives from health facilities and local government units who share a common goal—promoting and supporting breastfeeding in their communities.

Among the participants were delegates from District Hospitals (Bayawan, Siaton, Bindoy, Bais, Canlaon), Community Primary Hospitals (Dawis, Amio, Kalumboyan, Inapoy, Nabilog, Pacuan, Luz-Sikatuna, Mabinay), other private hospitals (ACE Doctors Bayawan, Holy Child Hospital), the Negros Oriental Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO), Negros Oriental Provincial Nutrition Council, Dumaguete City Health Office and supported by the delegates from the DOH Negros Island Region Center for Health Development (DOH NIR CHD).

The meeting was an opportunity to reconnect, share updates, and work together on improving how breastfeeding is supported in local health systems. Conversations focused on practical ways to overcome challenges and ensure that hospitals remain mother-and-baby friendly.

The SUMC MBFHI Committee appreciates everyone who participated for their continuous commitment to giving mothers and newborns the care and support they deserve.
