CLSI Update: Scrub, Don’t Circle, for Cleaner Blood Draws

The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) now advises against using circular motions when cleaning the site for blood draws. Instead, scrub the area back and forth using 70% isopropyl alcohol or 2% chlorhexidine. It’s the rubbing action and air drying that kill germs, not the wiping direction.

Recently, there has been significant concern regarding the rising resistance of Staphylococcus aureus to antiseptics. The Staphylococcus aureus, a common bacterium associated with various infections, has demonstrated high resistance to antiseptics, making it difficult to eliminate through disinfection.

This development highlights the need for enhanced infection control measures and the importance of researching alternative disinfectants that can effectively target resistant strains. One of the examples is the discovery of Nostocarboline Dimer (NCD9), and herbal antiseptics made from Rosemary and Pfaffia Paniculata extracts have been shown to eliminate pathogens with a low risk of affecting human cells.
