One more day until this year's Basic Course in Phacoemulsification!

The Sentro Oftalmologico Jose Rizal, in collaboration with the Ophthalmology Residents and Alumni Association (ORAA), brings you the Basic Course in Phacoemulsification this coming March 15-16, 2025.

The course will include lectures by PGH DOVS faculty and alumni, a hands-on Phacoemulsification Wet Lab session, and a Phacoemulsification Masterclass featuring live surgeries, video presentations, and discussions led by renowned cataract specialists.

This two-day, in-person event will take place at the Sentro Oftalmologico Jose Rizal Building, PGH Compound, Taft Avenue, Manila.

Dr. Edmin Michael Santos is a distinguished ophthalmologist who completed his residency at the Philippine General Hospital and pursued a clinical fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Tulane University Medical Center, Louisiana, USA. Currently, he serves as a Clinical Associate Professor at the UP-PGH Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and is affiliated with The Medical City, Manila Medical Center, and Asian Hospital and Medical Center. With his expertise in vitreoretinal surgery and phacoemulsification, he will be delivering an in-depth lecture on "The Phacoemulsification Machine: Understanding Basic Phacodynamics," offering valuable insights into the mechanics and principles behind this essential surgical technology.

Dr. Noel S. CariΓ±o is also a graduate of the UP-PGH Ophthalmology Residency Program, who is a leader in sutureless posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation without capsular support and Artisan lens implantation. As the Chief Medical Officer of Asia Pacific Eye Center and Medical Director of AsPac Eye Laser and Surgicenter, he has pioneered innovative approaches in intraocular lens implantation. His lecture on exploring options for aphakia will delve into various surgical techniques and advancements in treating aphakia, providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of available solutions.

Dr. Gregory Germar finished his fellowship in Medical and Surgical Retina at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in the University of the Philippines - Philippine General Hospital. He also took his International Fellowship in Retina at the University of Hawaii John Burns Medical School/Retina Center at Pali Momi. He is currently a Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of the Philippines - Philippine General Hospital and an active Consultant at St. Luke's Medical Center and The Medical City. He will be lecturing on Vitrectomy Pearls for the Phacoemulsification Surgeon: Part II - Posterior Segment Surgeon Viewpoint.

Dr. Benjamin Cabrera finished his fellowship in External Diseases at the Philippine General Hospital, and in Low Vision and Vision Rehabilitation at the National Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled in Saitama, Japan. He is currently a faculty at the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health. He will be lecturing on IOL Technology Overview: From Mono to EDOF.

Dr. Rainier Covar pursued his fellowship training in Glaucoma at the UP-PGH, and subsequently at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He is a sought-after resource speaker at numerous scientific programs and conferences in the Philippines and globally, including events hosted by the Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society and World Glaucoma Conference. He is particularly passionate about performing and teaching Ophthalmic intraocular surgeries, frequently being called upon to undertake innovative procedures in the Philippines and developing his own surgical instruments. He will be lecturing on Viscoelastic Protection: Overview of OVDs for Phacoemulsification.

Dr. Richard Raymund L. Nepomuceno finished his Fellowship in External Disease at the Philippine General Hospital Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He was an International Fellow of the Cornea-External Ocular Disease and Uveitis at Jules Stein Eye Institute in University of California, Los Angeles. Currently he is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, Department of Visual Sciences. He will be lecturing on Biometry Basics: IOL Formulas and Calculations.

Dr. Richard Kho received his Ophthalmology training at the University of the Philippines - Philippine General Hospital Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He received his fellowship training in Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute-UCLA. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in UP-PGH and the current Chief of the Cataract and Refractive Surgery Service and Vice-Chief of the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service. He is a founding member of the Philippine Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Neuro-Ophthalmology Club of the Philippines. He will be lecturing on Techniques for Nuclear Disassembly: From Sculpts to Chops and I&A Maneuvers: Techniques and Pearls for Safety.

Come and meet our speakers in the exclusive lecture series brought to you by this year’s Basic Course in Phacoemulsification 2025.

Dr. Reginald Robert Tan specializes in Corneal Transplantation and Refractive Surgery. He took his clinical fellowship on Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery at the University of Ottawa Eye Institute, Ottawa, Canada. He is currently an active consultant in the University of the Philippines - Philippine General Hospital and St. Luke's Medical Center. He will be lecturing on Pre-op Preparation: Optimizing the Ocular Surface.

Dr. Sharlene Noguera completed her Medical and Surgical Fellowship in External Disease and Cornea at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in the University of the Philippines - Philippine General Hospital in 2012, and completed a Clinical Observership in Cornea and Refractive Surgery Under Dr. Rajesh Fogla in Apollo Hospital, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, India. She is currently an active consultant at the Asian Eye Institute and is the training officer of Region I Medical Center. She will be lecturing on Wound Construction: From Incision to Closure.

Dr. Cesar Perez is a graduate of the residency program of the UP- Philippine General Hospital Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He is the current Head of the Eye Center at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center, a consultant at the Alabang Medical Center, and a Clinical Associate Professor at the UP College of Medicine Philippine General Hospital. He will be lecturing on Mastering Capsulorrhexis: Techniques and Tips.
