Every October, we celebrate 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 to give recognition and honor to our brave cancer warriors for every story of inspiration, silent struggles, and immense strength they have shown as they battle this incurable disease.
As we recognize the bravery and endurance of every woman in the world battling breast cancer, it is time for us to raise awareness by promoting good nutrition and early detection to prevent the early signs of cancer. This way, our loved ones, friends, colleagues, or just someone we know will not face the physical and financial burdens caused by this life-threatening disease.
As an individual, you can do something to lower the risk of breast cancer for you and for your loved ones through regular check-ups and screening, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and a cautious eating habit. Here’s how:
𝟭. 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 – Physical inactivity can cause a lot of lifestyle-related diseases, including cancer. Doing aerobic activities such as brisk walking, running, cycling, and swimming are some vigorous activities to make ourselves physically active.
𝟮. 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 – Being overweight, most especially during menopause, increases the risk of getting breast cancer.
𝟯. 𝗘𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁-𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘁 – Fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, vitamin E and vitamin C, coming from leafy and cruciferous vegetables such as kale, spinach and broccoli, and fruits such as oranges, citrus, lemon, and pomelo can help lower the risk of breast cancer. Whole grains, a great source of fiber, can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, and these include whole-wheat breads, pasta, and rice.
𝟰. 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗹 – Living a healthy lifestyle includes getting rid of alcoholic drinks and beverages. Too much alcohol consumption can increase the risk of getting breast cancer. Instead of alcohol, choose water or fruit juices.
𝟱. 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 – Most processed foods contain a high content of oil, sugar and salt which is contrary to our 𝘕𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘕𝘰. 8: 𝘏𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘺-𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘺 𝘴𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘢𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘵, 𝘮𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘬𝘢 𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘴. Too much consumption of processed foods like canned goods, sweetened beverages, processed meats, and dairy products are one of the causes of increasing rates of cancer.
𝟲. 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 –7-9 hours of sleep can improve our immune system function, repair dead cells, and reduce inflammation, which is an increasing risk factor of cancer.
Along with a healthy lifestyle and a cautious diet, it is also important that we show empathy and attention to our breast cancer patients, whether they may be one of our family members, loved ones, or friends, to give them comfort amidst their sufferings and silent battles. Let us spread positivity and hope, as they rely on our strength and determination that we can beat cancer if we fight together. (𝘗𝘋𝘖𝘐 𝘉𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘶𝘪𝘦 𝘓𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘥𝘢/𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘹𝘪𝘪@𝘺𝘢𝘩𝘰𝘰.𝘤𝘰𝘮)
