The Effects of Age and Treatment Intensity on Behavioral Target Mastery With Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Intervention Using Causal Moderation Models.

"Virues-Ortega et al found that the total time spent on the intervention (in hours) was the most critical factor in predicting positive outcomes, namely, the treatment's intensity (hours per week) and duration (total weeks) are crucial. More time spent on the intervention leads to better results, regardless of the participant's initial condition or age. findings align with those of Eldevick et al., who demonstrated through multiple regression models that their models explained a statistically significant, albeit small, portion of the variance in both IQ change (F(4, 211)=5.22, p

"In a recent review, two studies estimate that the prevalence of at least one comorbid psychiatric disorder at 54.8% and up to 94%, with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depressive disorders and sleep disorders are the most frequent co morbidities. In addition, individuals with ASD are more likely to experience somatic co-morbidities such as epilepsy, gastro-intestinal (GI) disorders or sight/hearing impairments. Both psychiatric and somatic comorbidities further complicate the diagnosis of ASD as they can either exacerbate or mitigate typical symptoms of autism. This can lead to misdiagnosis with inadequate management or delays in diagnosis with missed opportunity for treatment. Additionally, numerous studies have demonstrated the negative impacts of co-morbidities on autistic individuals as well as their surroundings, both in terms of quality of life and economic burden."

"To date, research examining pathological demand avoidance (PDA) has been hampered by problems concerning definition, construct validity and measurement. Consequently, evidence that PDA is either a separate disorder or constitutes a stable subtype or trait in autistic individuals is currently lacking. Demand avoidant behaviours are clearly a profound challenge for some individuals and their families, and these may be associated with anxiety, trauma or the perception of demands and expectations as fundamentally threatening. Current evidence suggests these behaviours involve an identifiable cluster of parent-reported behaviours in autistic children and adolescents, but it remains unclear whether they represent a distinct condition or primarily differ from other conditions with regard to severity or impact of symptoms. Possible associations with anxiety have been reported, and the EDA-Q may be a helpful tool in further investigations of the relationships between PDA and mental conditions typically involving avoidance. It also remains unclear whether demand avoidant behaviours are more prevalent in autism than in other neurodevelopmental conditions, as there has been no systematic examination of this issue."

"Another implication is that high treatment dosage yields positive treatment outcomes for children across a wide range of ages (M=7.57). This finding challenges the commonly held perception that only young children with ASD may benefit from intensive ABA treatment. Granpeesheh and colleagues reported that maximizing treatment hours during the younger ages (that is, under 7 years old) may potentially yield greater treatment gains. Nevertheless, without taking into account any child-specific variables including age, treatment intensity and treatment duration alone accounted for a significant portion of treatment progress across all curricular domains. These findings also have implications for expectations of skill acquisition during treatment. Additional research on the relationship between treatment duration and skill acquisition may serve to inform both clinicians and parents regarding potential treatment outcomes, reduce attrition, and increase parental involvement in treatment."
