IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR EYE EXAMS πŸ©ΊπŸ‘οΈ

Regular eye exams are an important part of finding eye diseases early to protect your vision. When eye diseases are diagnosed in their early stages, treatment to prevent vision loss is most effective.

These include amblyopia (lazy eye, which is common in children), refractive errors (astigmatism, hyperopia, myopia, presbyopia), cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Children's eyes should be checked regularly by an eye doctor or pediatrician. Experts recommend that children have at least one eye exam between age 3 and 5 years. If your eyes are healthy and vision is good, you should have a complete exam by your ophthalmologist once in your 20s and twice in your 30s.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that adults get a complete eye examination at age 40. This is when early signs of disease or changes in vision may appear.

Some adults shouldn't wait until they are 40 to have a complete eye exam. See an ophthalmologist now if you have an eye disease or risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and family history of eye disease.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

SMOKING PLUS VA**NG WORSENS EYE PROBLEMS

Individuals who smoke and v**e (dual users) are more likely to report eye problems including dryness, redness, pain, blurry vision, light sensitivity, and headaches, according to a 2023 study published in the peer-reviewed journal JAMA Ophthalmology which involved more than 4,000 adolescents and young adults. Eye symptoms were much worse and frequent in dual users than in people who used only one product.

Serious eye injuries, including serious burns and lacerations to the eye, have also occurred when electronic ci******es or v**es exploded.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

VISUAL DISABILITY: WHO IS QUALIFIED FOR A PWD CARD?

βœ… POOR VISION (VISION OF 20/70 OR WORSE IN THE BETTER SEEING EYE)
If your vision does not improve better than 20/70 with eye glasses, then you are qualified for a PWD card.

βœ… TUNNEL VISION (FIELD OF VISION LESS THAN 20 DEGREES
WIDE IN THE BETTER SEEING EYE)
If your vision is constricted and poor in the periphery, then you are qualified for a PWD card.

βœ… NO CURE (VISION DOES NOT IMPROVE WITH EYE GLASSES, MEDICATIONS, OR SURGERY)
If there is no other option to improve your vision, then you are qualified for a PWD card.

EYE GLASSES, EYE MISALIGNMENT OR COLOR-BLINDNESS DOES NOT
AUTOMATICALLY QUALIFY YOU FOR A PWD CARD.

CONSULT YOUR EYE DOCTOR TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR EYE CONDITION.

This is a public service reminder from the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology.

PROTECT YOUR EYES FROM CHLORINE OR POOL WATER

Summer is the perfect time to take a refreshing dip in the pool. However, chlorine-treated swimming pools can irritate or even harm your eyes. Here are some steps you can take to protect your eyes from chlorinated pool water:

βœ… Wear a pair of swim goggles every time you swim. Goggles keep pool chemicals out of your eyes, helping to keep your tear film healthy.
βœ… Splash your closed eyes with fresh water immediately after swimming. This washes chlorine and other chemicals off your eyelids and eyelashes.
βœ… Use over-the-counter lubricating eye drops before and after swimming to keep the tear film balanced and eyes comfortable.
βœ… If you have dry eye, you can help protect your tear film by putting in thicker artificial tears or β€œgel tears” before putting on your goggles. Check with your ophthalmologist to see about prescription eye drops as well.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.
