PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN'S EYES DURING SCREEN TIME

Instruct your children to follow these tips to prevent digital eye strain:

1️⃣ Instruct your children to blink as often as possible to help lubricate their eyes.
2️⃣ Remind them to look away from their screen every 20 minutes and look at an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
3️⃣ Teach them how to use artificial tears to lubricate their eyes when they feel dry.
4️⃣ Tell them to sit about 25 inches or at arm’s length from their screen and adjust its height so they’re looking slightly downward at it.
5️⃣ Adjust the brightness and contrast of your child’s screen and dim the lighting near the screen.
6️⃣ Get your child prescription computer eyeglasses.
7️⃣ Install a matte screen filter to cut glare.

HOW ARE SORE EYES TREATED?

Treatment depends on the type of sore eyes you have. Sore eyes can be caused by a virus, bacteria or allergies. There is no specific treatment for viral conjunctivitis, as your immune system will fight the virus on its own. You may place a cool, wet washcloth over your eyes to ease the discomfort. Your ophthalmologist may prescribe antibiotic eye drops for bacterial conjunctivitis. For allergic conjunctivitis, your ophthalmologist may recommend certain eye drops or ointment.

HOW TO AVOID CONTACT LENS-RELATED EYE INFECTION

Here are some tips to prevent contact lens-related eye infections:

1️⃣ Rub your lenses as you clean them to remove bacteria and protein buildup.
2️⃣ Always use store-bought solution to rinse and store your lenses.
3️⃣ Replace your lens case every few months to prevent bacterial growth.
4️⃣ Give your eyes a break from contacts periodically.
5️⃣ Never sleep in your lenses - it increases infection risk!
6️⃣ Follow your eye doctor's recommendations for replacing lenses.
7️⃣ Regularly visit your ophthalmologist for check-ups.

FACTS ABOUT GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a disease that usually occurs when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. The extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve. There are two major types. Open-angle glaucoma, the most common, happens gradually. It is painless and causes no vision changes at first. As the disease progresses, blind spots develop in your peripheral vision. Angle-closure glaucoma is a true emergency requiring immediate medical attention to prevent blindness. Early symptoms include blurred vision, halos, mild headaches or eye pain.

FACTS ABOUT CATARACTS

A cataract is a condition in which the natural lens of your eyes becomes cloudy, causing your vision to be blurry or hazy. The most common cause is aging, which causes normal eye changes after age 40. Vision changes caused by cataracts include blurry vision, seeing double or a ghosted image, extra sensitivity to light, difficulty seeing well at night or needing more light when you read, and seeing bright colors as faded or yellow instead.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN CAUSES OF CONJUNCTIVITIS?

Conjunctivitis or sore eyes has three main causes. Viral conjunctivitis, the most common, is usually caused by the virus that causes the common cold. Bacterial conjunctivitis can sometimes be due to the bacteria that cause strep throat. Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are very contagious. Allergic conjunctivitis is an allergic reaction to pollen, animals, cigarette smoke, pool chlorine, car fumes or other environmental factors. It is not contagious.

VISION PROBLEMS WITH CATARACTS

HOW IS DIABETIC RETINOPATHY DIAGNOSED?

Your ophthalmologist will put drops in your eye to dilate (widen) your pupil, so that he or she can look through a special lens to see the inside of your eye. Your doctor may do optical coherence tomography (OCT) to look closely at the retina. In OCT, a machine scans the retina and provides detailed images of its thickness, helping your doctor find and measure swelling of your macula.

Your ophthalmologist may also do fluorescein angiography to see what is happening with the blood vessels in your retina. Fluorescein angiography uses a yellow dye called fluorescein, which is injected into a vein (usually in your arm). The dye travels through your blood vessels. A special camera takes photos of the retina as the dye travels throughout its blood vessels. This will show any blood vessels that are blocked or leaking fluid, as well as any abnormal blood vessels.
