Iodine - The First 1000 Days of Life

Iodine is an essential micronutrient necessary for the function of thyroid hormones. Iodine deficiency can lead to a broad range of health problems throughout life, but it is most critical in the early stages of development. The fetal brain is extremely dependent on an adequate iodine supply.

The scientific understanding of the role of iodine during gestation has substantially improved in past several years. Thyroid hormone receptors have been discovered in placental and embryonic tissues, and maternal-fetal transfer of thyroid hormones is now better understood.
