Western Visayas Medical Center Achieves Regional First in Advanced Cardiac Diagnostics

Iloilo City, Philippines — The Western Visayas Medical Center – Cardiovascular Care Center (WVMC-CVCC) proudly announces a historic milestone with the successful performance of the first Diagnostic Pharmacological Provocation Test in the Western Visayas Region, marking a significant advancement in the field of Cardiac Electrophysiology.

This specialized diagnostic procedure is a critical tool used to unmask concealed electrocardiographic patterns in patients suspected of having Brugada Syndrome—a potentially life-threatening inherited cardiac condition associated with sudden cardiac death, often occurring during sleep.

The initiative forms part of the Bangungut Awareness Campaign, a flagship health program of WVMC-CVCC aimed at increasing public awareness of Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS), locally known as “Bangungot.” This condition has long been recognized as a silent yet devastating cause of sudden death, particularly among seemingly healthy individuals.

“With this capability now available in our region, we are taking a crucial step toward early detection and prevention of sudden cardiac death,” the center stated. “Through timely identification of at-risk individuals, we can provide appropriate interventions that may ultimately save lives.”

The introduction of this diagnostic service underscores WVMC-CVCC’s commitment to bringing cutting-edge cardiovascular care closer to the people of Western Visayas, reducing the need for patients to travel to other regions for specialized testing.

Healthcare providers are encouraged to refer patients with clinical suspicion of Brugada Syndrome or those with a family history of unexplained sudden death for appropriate evaluation.

As the center continues to expand its services, WVMC-CVCC remains steadfast in its mission to promote cardiovascular health through innovation, early detection, and community awareness—working toward a future where preventable cardiac deaths are significantly reduced.

Another proud moment for WVMC on the global stage!

During the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) 2026, held on March 23–27, 2026 at the Iloilo Convention Center, Dr. Endrik Sy of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians, in his compelling talk titled “Healthy Family, Healthy Pilipinas: Achieving Universal Health Care, One Booklet, One Family at a Time,” spotlighted a remarkable initiative from Western Visayas Medical Center — the WVMC Employees Booklet.

This initiative is a product of the strong collaboration between the Public Health Unit, the Employees Clinic, and the Department of Family and Community Medicine — a testament to what can be achieved when different sectors work together toward a shared vision of better health for all.

As WVMC continues to break new ground, this milestone reminds us that meaningful change begins with small, purposeful steps — and grows through shared vision, dedication, and heart.

From our halls to the world stage, WVMC proves that true healthcare transformation starts at home — and its impact knows no boundaries.
