Teeth grinding, also known as Bruxism, is the involuntary clenching, grinding, and gnashing of the teeth during the day (awake bruxism) or at night (sleep bruxism). It is a common condition that affects about 10% of adults and up to 15% of children.

The cause of bruxism depends on many factors such as:

• Sleep Disorder
• Chronic Stress, Anxiety/Depression
• To***co and/or Alcohol Use
• Genetics
• Misaligned Teeth
• Vitamin B5, Magnesium, and Calcium Deficiency
• Certain Drugs and Diseases

You may not realize that you’re grinding your teeth at night. But signs that you may have bruxism include:

• Disrupted sleep
• Headaches or facial pain
• Earaches
• Painful or loose teeth
• Sore jaw muscles
• Teeth fractures
• Wear on teeth
• Pain with eating
• Clicking, popping or grinding noises when you move your jaw

If you experience any symptoms of bruxism, seek medical advice right away.

Affecting 3.9 billion people, untreated oral disease is the most common unmet healthcare needs globally. Untreated tooth decay is the most prevalent disease of mankind and more than 530 million children suffer from untreated dental cavities in the primary teeth.

Keep in mind that prevention is always better than cure! Regular dental checkups and good oral hygiene are key to preventing cavities.

Visit your dentist regularly, at least every six months for a dental cleaning (oral prophylaxis). You might also consider newer dental treatments including dental sealants and fluoride treatment to lower the cavity risk in children and teens.

If a cavity is not treated, it grows and reaches the nerve, and later causes a tooth abscess. This situation would need a root canal treatment.
