Nalakip pud ang ubang estudyante nga dili kabalo magbinisaya. Ang tumong sa mao nga organisasyon kay ang 𝙥𝙖𝙜𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙮 𝙪𝙜 𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙖𝙮 𝙨𝙖 𝙢𝙜𝙖 𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙮𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚.

Ma. Isabel I. Perez, valedictorian of Batch AUREUM, Class of 2025, centered her valedictory address on the challenges and realities of the healthcare system during the Graduation Ball themed “Golden Hour: The Regal Farewell,” held at the Grand Xing Imperial Hotel on July 21.

Perez spoke about the realities she and her batchmates encountered during clerkship, noting how the cracks in the healthcare system “became visible through overcrowded wards, underpaid and overworked staff, and scarce resources.”

“In just one year, we saw the cracks in the healthcare system up close and yet, it was in these difficult conditions that we witnessed the best of humanity. We saw nurses who transformed exhaustion into kindness. We saw residents who taught not just with words, but with their own sacrifices. And we saw patients who cared for us like family,” she said.

She went on to describe the paradox of genuine compassion often coming from patients themselves.

“Our patients, who despite their own pain, would show their concern by telling us: ‘Doc, du kagabi ka pa man gabantay samon, tulog man doc.’ Our patients who, despite their poverty, would offer us fruits or home-cooked food, saying, ‘Para sa inyo doc, o para kakaon mn kamo.’ Their gratitude reminded us of why we chose this path, and why we must continue to fight for a healthcare system worthy of their trust,” Perez added.

Perez further stressed that, while there are moments of hope, the healthcare system must continue to improve.

“Despite these silver linings, we should not just accept the status quo. We cannot build a humane healthcare system if we strip the humanity away from those who keep it alive. Burnout, neglect, and inefficiencies should never be the price of compassion,” she said.

The valedictorian then called for a stronger commitment to humane healthcare, saying, “To bring humanity back into healthcare, we must first make the system humane—both for the patients and for every health worker who stands on the frontline.”

Closing her speech, Perez highlighted the responsibility represented by the white coat, stating, “The white coat we will soon wear is not just a uniform—it is a promise. A promise that we will fight not just for cures, but for care—for a future where healing is shared, and where doctors, nurses, and patients are not separate players, but a community united by dignity and compassion.”

She also extended her gratitude to “Dean Dr. Victor Amantillo Jr., clerkship coordinator Dr. Helmar Soldevilla, faculty members Dr. Alcala, Dr. Rufon, Doc Sermonia, mentor Doc Gardose, Ma’am Joy, and the WVSU-COM faculty, staff, and residents, as well as her parents, friends, and classmates.”

Perez served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Vital Signs Publication, the official student publication of West Visayas State University - College of Medicine, for the academic year 2023–2024.
