Dr. Rex Melchor Muyco, fondly known to many as “Toto Rex,” passed away in the early hours of April 22. The news still doesn’t feel real. We keep expecting to hear his voice along the hallway, see his familiar smile, or catch one of his signature jokes.
Dr. Rex wasn’t just our mentor — he was our anchor. At Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital, he was a constant presence: wise, generous, and always willing to go the extra mile for both patients and colleagues. He gave without hesitation, never withheld knowledge, and shaped countless lives — residents and patients alike.
His humor was as legendary as his brilliance. He had a way of lighting up even the heaviest days, grounding us with laughter, and teaching us not just how to manage cases, but how to care with heart. He was the kind of doctor we all aspire to become — selfless, principled, deeply human.
Many of us are still trying to process the weight of this loss. It’s never easy to say goodbye to someone who felt like a permanent fixture in our lives — someone whose presence brought comfort, wisdom, and courage in equal measure.
To be mentored by Dr. Muyco was to be reminded constantly of what it truly means to serve. He taught with passion, healed with compassion, and lived with quiet integrity. He gave so much of himself to others, often more than he had to spare.
Toto Rex was, and will always be, a pillar of Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital — not only in oncology, but in the hearts of every person who had the privilege to know him. We carry forward the lessons he left behind, the laughter he shared, and the standard of care he modeled so effortlessly.
Rest well, Dr. Rex. Your light lives on in every life you’ve touched.
