Bridging Compassion and Excellence: Pediatric Palliative Care Benchmarking Between NCH and PCMC
A meaningful day of collaboration and shared learning was held on March 25, 2026, as the National Children’s Hospital (NCH)—the first hospital in the country to establish a structured and organized Pediatric Palliative Care (PPC) Center, with the advocacy of helping and supporting the development of Pediatric Palliative Care in the Philippines through sharing its best practices—welcomed the Philippine Children’s Medical Center, headed by Dr. Canileure Caballes-Dayrit (Nephrologist) for a Benchmarking Activity in PPC, strengthening partnerships in delivering compassionate, holistic care for children and their families.
The program opened with Welcome Remarks from Dr. Philip A. Morales, Medical Center Chief, followed by the checking in of participants and a presentation on the background of Pediatric Palliative Care and the milestones of NCH, where Dr. Rhea Angelica Jayma chaired the establishment of PPC, thoughtfully shared by Dr. Adelina Uyvico, PPC Specialist in charge of Training & Research.
The benchmarking activity was facilitated by Dr. Maria Liza Naranjo, PPC Coordinator for Training and Research, ensuring a smooth and engaging exchange.
An insightful multidisciplinary panel discussion featured Dr. Leicel Goyena, PPC Specialist in charge of Clinical Service, Sheena Robenta (PPC Social Worker), and Ma. Maria Socorro Vargas (PPC Nurse), highlighting lived experiences, challenges, and best practices, followed by an interactive Question and Answer session.
The visit continued with a hospital tour led by Dr. Lannie Fofue, PPC Specialist in charge of Administrative & Logistics, together with Neil Patrick Navarro (PPC Social Worker), Ashley Cianna Paulino (PPC Nurse), and Dr. Yasmin Sulit (Pediatric Anesthesiologist), where participants observed firsthand the processes and best practices of PPC at NCH.
The activity concluded with a feedback evaluation and analysis facilitated by Dr. Maria Liza Naranjo.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our colleagues from the PCMC for their visit and meaningful exchange. Together, we continue to strengthen PPC services for the children and families we serve.
