👩🏫 Adequate nutrition is required for optimal structure and function of skin, hair and nails. Dietary intake is the most important source of nutrients, but dietary supplements can also be used to add nutrients to the diet (e.g. vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbals, etc), particularly in those with nutrient deficiencies.
🔎 This post is a deep dive into dietary supplements with a special focus on regulation (particularly in the US setting; several countries have similar regulations), and its ramifications. General recommendations will be provided. For more specific information, please consult medical professionals, or nutrition and dietary experts in your specific location.

👩🏫While the expectation is that sunscreens will deliver their labeled SPF, many studies have shown a mismatch between the expected protection achieved by sunscreens and that observed in practice, with some even suggesting sunscreen use is related to sunburn and skin cancer.
🧴Sunscreens are valuable tools in sun protection but they are NOT the only means to protect ourselves from the sun.
⤴️Swipe through the post for more information on sunscreen application: expectations vs reality, and how we can circumvent these challenges as consumers.

👩⚕️ The supplement industry is huge nowadays, some of the most popular ones are those marketed for skin, hair, and nails. The 2021 Goldstein Research Report states the global beauty supplements market is currently valued at $3.5 billion, and is expected to increase at the rate of 8.6% over 2019 – 2035.
🔘 There are so many marketed acne supplements. These supplements often claim to “cure” and “treat” acne — but is there enough science behind the hype? TLDR - no.
👯♀️ This post discusses acne evidence-based management best practices, and what we believe represent the main issues relating to the use of acne supplements.

👩🏫 It is human nature to want to search for solutions, answers, and explanations to be able to control aspects of our life. Diet is something that can be 'controlled' and it is also an easy factor to pin the blame on.
📰 Adding fuel to the fire, nutrition/dietary studies tend to disproportionately attract media attention and catch the public’s eye when compared to other scientific studies, particularly if a specific food or diet is touted to cause or prevent a certain disease.
❓So what role does diet play in acne? breaks this down in her post, but before going forward it’s important to remember acne is not caused by one individual factor. It is a result of an interplay between genetic and hormonal factors, skin cells “sticking together” leading to clogged pores, excess oil/sebum production, bacteria in the skin (Cutibacterium acnes) and inflammation. Lifestyle and environment may influence acne severity.

👩🏫 Sheet masks are literally here, there, & everywhere – but can they really do anything for your skin? Swipe through to decide for yourself if they deserve a spot in your routine.
📌 Here are some tips in using sheet masks:
- Avoid leaving the mask on beyond the recommended duration.
- If irritation occurs, remove the product and wash thoroughly.
- Those with sensitive skin may patch test mask fluid prior to using the mask.
- You may use leftover fluid directly on skin after masking. Discard remaining.
- Paper masks are often cheaper, but skin adherence is better with bio-cellulose, hydrogel & silicone masks.

Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that breaks bonds between skin cells, making these easier to shed off. This in turn helps improve the appearance of fine lines & superficial wrinkles, lighten appearance of dark spots, and improve skin texture to reduce dullness.
Here are some recommendations on using glycolic acid:
📌 Those with sensitive skin may tolerate gentle glycolic acid formulations. Tips for those with sensitive skin:
➡️ Patch test before use.
➡️ Start with a low-concentration product (10% or less) 3x a week. Increase as tolerated, or maintain at a low frequency if that suits your skin best.
➡️ Look for soothing & hydrating ingredients in the product formulation. This reduces the potential for irritation.
➡️ Moisturize & protect from the sun.
➡️ Discontinue/pause if the skin is irritated.

👩🏫 What exactly is a moisturizer?
Moisturizers are products that are able to provide water and/or oils (lipids) to the skin.
Therefore, moisturizers can address dryness (lack of oil) and/or dehydration (lack of water), depending on the ingredients in the product.

👩🏫 Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that breaks corneocyte bonds (chemical exfoliant) making these easier to shed off. Glycolic acid can improve the appearance of fine lines & superficial wrinkles, lighten appearance of dark spots, and improve skin texture to reduce dullness.
📌 It’s a myth that all glycolic acid products are irritating, and that everyone with sensitive skin cannot use this active. Glycolic acid products differ in their irritation potential, which in turn depends on acid concentration, product pH, other ingredients in the product, and overall formulation. There are gentle products out there suitable for sensitive skin.

Here’s ’s B.A.S.I.C.S. mantra for skin care as a way to !
✅ B-asic essentials
- Use a non-drying cleanser suited to your skin type. Some cleansers do more than cleansing, and can be beneficial for those with specific skin concerns like acne.
✅ A-ddress your personal skin concerns and target these in your routine
- Your skin care routine should cater to YOUR skin, so the first step in building a routine is to identify your skin type and skin concerns. There is a skin care active for every skin issue! ❤️
✅ S-imple and targeted routine
- I like using skin care products with multifunctional actives that do different things for my skin e.g. keep my skin plump and hydrated, brighten overall skin tone, lighten appearance of dark marks, and even out my skin texture.
✅ I-ndividualize based on your preferences. If it’s not sustainable and doesn’t spark joy, then it’s not the best routine for you.
✅ C-onsult a board-certified dermatologist.
✅ S-kin is a part of a whole. Nourish your body with a healthy lifestyle, and your skin will thank you!
