Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that breaks bonds between skin cells, making these easier to shed off. This in turn helps improve the appearance of fine lines & superficial wrinkles, lighten appearance of dark spots, and improve skin texture to reduce dullness.
Check some recommendations on using glycolic acid in this post below.

👩🏫 When we talk about active ingredients, we’re talking about the constituents in the skin care product that does what it’s supposed to do.
▶️ For example, in an acne face wash, the active ingredient is 2% salicylic acid. If you put some of the cleanser on your hand, there’s an appreciable amount of cleanser there, but the amount of salicylic acid there is miniscule. So what’s the rest of it?
🍪 To better understand this, let’s talk about chocolate chip cookies. Read more in this ’s post.

Sunscreens limit the amount of ultraviolet radiation that reaches the skin.
☀️ UVB rays: shorter wavelengths; strongly associated with sunburn and skin cancer
☀️ UVA rays: longer wavelengths; more responsible for skin aging (wrinkles, hyperpigmentation)
☀️ Both rays may contribute to skin cancer & aging.
☀️ UVB is filtered by glass/windows, while only 1/4-1/3 of UVA rays are blocked.
While it IS important to protect ourselves from the sun, the risk of developing sun-induced skin conditions vary depending on:
1️⃣ Amount of UVR your skin is exposed to
2️⃣ Your susceptibility to sun damage
While it isn’t a bad idea to use sunscreen indoors, the risk for sun-induced conditions varies from person to person.
If you’re at risk for or already have these conditions, or if you simply want to prevent them, then it’s best to apply indoors.

👩🏫While the expectation is that sunscreens will deliver their labeled SPF, many studies have shown a mismatch between the expected protection achieved by sunscreens and that observed in practice, with some even suggesting sunscreen use is related to sunburn and skin cancer.
☀️SPF is the ratio of the least amount of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) required to produce minimal redness on sunscreen-protected skin to the amount of UVR required to produce the same redness on unprotected skin. Basically, an SPF 30 sunscreen (applied adequately) will allow your skin to handle 30 times more UVR before burning.

👩🏫 Hair color is the third largest category in the hair care market after shampoo and conditioner, and is expected to grow even further. In the early days of the pandemic during quarantine, sales of at-home hair color kits soared, with some companies reporting 500-750% increase in orders.
⚠️ When doing coloring procedures that have a higher potential to damage hair (e.g. bleaching), going with a reputable salon and an experienced hair stylist will decrease the risk of hair damage.

👩🏫 Studies have shown that stress can impact overall skin wellness, and may also cause skin conditions (particularly chronic inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea) to flare up.
🧠 While there is still a lot to learn about the nuances of the mind-skin connection, it is accepted that a bidirectional pathway between the brain and the skin exists.
➡️ This post discusses how stress affects skin, as well as simple tips to manage stress (we cannot fully eliminate if from our lives, unfortunately). Healthy lifestyle habits, including a well-balanced diet and exercise, avoidance of smoking and moderate consumption of alcohol may also help to regulate stress hormones in the body, which should in turn have positive effects for skin and hair.
🥰 Taking care of the skin has a huge role in overall health because it performs - among many other functions - the all-important role of being a barrier to the outside world.

👩🏫 Adequate nutrition is required for optimal structure and function of skin, hair and nails. Dietary intake is the most important source of nutrients, but dietary supplements can also be used to add nutrients to the diet (e.g. vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbals, etc), particularly in those with nutrient deficiencies.
💊 Some of the most popular dietary supplements are those marketed for skin, hair, and nails. The 2021 Goldstein Research Report states the global beauty supplements market is currently valued at $3.5 billion, and is expected to increase at the rate of 8.6% over 2019 – 2035. Asia-Pacific accounted for the highest share, followed by Europe and North America.
🔎 This post is a deep dive into dietary supplements with a special focus on regulation (particularly in the US setting; several countries have similar regulations), and its ramifications. General recommendations will be provided. For more specific information, please consult medical professionals, or nutrition and dietary experts in your specific location.
