👩‍🏫 Studies have shown that stress can impact overall skin wellness, and may also cause skin conditions (particularly chronic inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea) to flare up.

🧠 While there is still a lot to learn about the nuances of the mind-skin connection, it is accepted that a bidirectional pathway between the brain and the skin exists.

➡️ This post discusses how stress affects skin, as well as simple tips to manage stress (we cannot fully eliminate if from our lives, unfortunately). Healthy lifestyle habits, including a well-balanced diet and exercise, avoidance of smoking and moderate consumption of alcohol may also help to regulate stress hormones in the body, which should in turn have positive effects for skin and hair.

🥰 Taking care of the skin has a huge role in overall health because it performs - among many other functions - the all-important role of being a barrier to the outside world.

👩‍🏫 Adequate nutrition is required for optimal structure and function of skin, hair and nails. Dietary intake is the most important source of nutrients, but dietary supplements can also be used to add nutrients to the diet (e.g. vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbals, etc), particularly in those with nutrient deficiencies.

💊 Some of the most popular dietary supplements are those marketed for skin, hair, and nails. The 2021 Goldstein Research Report states the global beauty supplements market is currently valued at $3.5 billion, and is expected to increase at the rate of 8.6% over 2019 – 2035. Asia-Pacific accounted for the highest share, followed by Europe and North America.

🔎 This post is a deep dive into dietary supplements with a special focus on regulation (particularly in the US setting; several countries have similar regulations), and its ramifications. General recommendations will be provided. For more specific information, please consult medical professionals, or nutrition and dietary experts in your specific location.

This post discusses some similarities and differences between Tretinoin and Adapalene, ending with my thoughts on selecting between these two retinoids.

✅ Aging of the skin is caused by intrinsic (“chronological aging”) and extrinsic factors.

✅ Chronically aged skin is characterized by fine wrinkling, thinning and a propensity to dryness, but is generally smooth and unblemished. This type of aging is caused by physiological factors, including genetic, metabolic, hormonal, and nutritional influences. It cannot be prevented, but it can be delayed or accelerated. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun speeds up this process.

❗️Always remember, while we all age differently, we can all age gracefully. And also — aging is a privilege!

Healthy skin as a goal is not only achievable, it can be personalized based on the skin YOU are actually in. And why do realistic skin goals matter? Do males and females need different skin care products? The short answer is no.

While there are some variations between male and female skin, there are more differences between individuals than there are between sexes.

In fact, formulations in skin care products marketed for men and women are generally the same with subtle differences, if any (e.g. scent, color). Often it is simply packaging and marketing that sets products apart.

Retinoids remain the most popular skincare actives in our community, and one of the most common questions receives is, “When should I start retinoids for photoaging?”

📌 Quick review of retinoids:

🔘 The term “retinoids” refers to vitamin A derivatives. These include drugs (e.g. adapalene, tazarotene, tretinoin) and cosmetics (e.g. retinol and retinaldehyde).

🔘 The active ingredient of retinoids is retinoic acid. Some retinoids directly provide retinoic acid (e.g. tretinoin), while others (e.g. retinol and retinaldehyde) undergo a stepwise conversion in skin to become retinoic acid.

🔘 Retinoid ingredients requiring multiple conversion steps are generally less potent and less irritating than those needing fewer steps. This is the retinoid conversion process: Retinyl esters ➡️ Retinol ➡️ Retinaldehyde ➡️ Retinoic acid. This is why retinol would be a good option for those who are starting retinoids and those with sensitive skin, while retinaldehyde may be better suited for more experienced retinoid users and those with resilient skin.

🧖‍♀️🩺The skin care industry is unique in the way it is a cross between medical health and aesthetics, and between drugs and cosmetics.
