In 2018, a dentist in Germany, faced a case that would make history. A 26-year-old patient walked in complaining of persistent pain and swelling in the jaw. On X-rays, the dentist noticed something unusual: one of the teeth had an abnormally long root stretching far deeper than expected.
The procedure was delicate. With precision, Dr. Max Lukas carefully extracted the tooth — and what came out left everyone stunned. From crown to root, the tooth measured a staggering 37.2 mm (1.46 inches). For perspective, that’s about the length of an adult thumb!
After verification, Guinness World Records officially recognized it as the longest human tooth ever extracted. A scientific case report was later published, documenting this rare phenomenon for medical literature.
What’s fascinating is that such cases highlight how unpredictable dental anatomy can be. While most teeth fall within a normal size range, sometimes nature surprises us with extreme variations. And in this instance, that surprise turned into a world record.
