A callus is a thickened and hardened area of skin that forms as a protective response to repeated friction, pressure, or irritation.
Cause: Usually develops on the hands, feet, or other areas exposed to constant rubbing (e.g., from shoes, tools, or manual work).
Appearance: The skin becomes rough, dry, and sometimes yellowish.
Purpose: It’s the body’s natural way of protecting underlying tissues from injury.
Medical Note: While usually harmless, in people with diabetes or poor circulation, a callus can sometimes lead to wounds or ulcers if not properly cared for.
