Since May 13, 2022, cases of Monkeypox have been detected in countries that are not endemic for the Monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus is part of the same family of smallpox. It was first detected in monkeys in 1958 and the first human case was recorded in 1970.

As of writing, no case of Monkeypox virus has been detected in the Philippines. But we have to remain vigilant and knowledgeable on what the Monkeypox virus is

So, what do we need to know about the Monkeypox?

Symptoms include the following:

Initial symptoms of:
🔺 Fever
🔺 Headache
🔺 Muscle ache (Myalgia)
🔺 Fatigue
🔺Swollen lymph nodes

Followed by:
🔺 Mouth/oral sores
🔺 Skin rashes

How does it spread?
🔸Human-to-human transmission occurs primarily through large respiratory droplets (e.g. coughing, talking, sneezing)
🔸Direct contact with body fluids or skin lesions (rashes)
🔸Indirect contact with contaminated materials such as clothes and beddings
🔸Direct contact with infected animals
