The effects of peppermint essential oil inhalation was evaluated in a preclinical model of Alzheimer’s disease (a model that involves elevated beta-amyloid production associated with behavioral modifications and age-related deterioration of learning and memory).

Subjects were split into three groups:
1) normal subjects without AD
2) subjects with AD that inhaled peppermint oil, one hour, twice daily, for 21 days
3) subjects with AD that inhaled rosemary oil, one hour, twice daily, for 21 days.

Inhaling peppermint improved memory and the health of neurons in the hippocampus (returned to normal), and the deposition of amyloid reduced. In addition, markers of brain oxidative stress reduced and enzymatic antioxidant activity (SOD, GSH-PX) increased significantly to normal levels. Models were used to identify the mechanism of action and the researchers reported that peppermint improves cognitive function by improving amino acid metabolism (arginine, proline, cysteine, and methionine) and energy production, and reducing brain oxidative damage, and protecting brain cells.
