Are you a Farmer? You may be at higher risk for Parkinson’s Disease...

People who are involved with farming including pig, cattle, fruit, arboriculture and permanent crops, not only feed us, they also likely handle insecticides which puts them at risk for Parkinson’s.

A 2011 study published in the journal, Movement Disorder confirmed that their findings are ā€œconsistent with studies reporting an association between PD and insecticide use and show that workers in farms specialized in fruits or permanent crops may be an occupational group at higher PD riskā€.

Echoing this, a 2025 study published in Nature concluded that their findings ā€œrepresent a preliminary work that suggests the potential involvement of occupational risk factors related to farming in PD onset and developmentā€.

Researchers believe that the cause of Parkinson’s disease is likely a complex interaction involving abnormal genetics, occupational risks, environmental factors such as pesticides, and other factors.

Due to the lack of specific diagnostic tests the vast majority of individuals at risk for Parkinson’s are not being screened early or accurately enough. Because of limited approved treatments, those with Parkinson’s disease are not being offered comprehensive treatments.

Living near a golf course? It may increase your risk of Parkinson’s disease.

Findings from a study published in May 2025 indicate that living near a golf course could be a potential risk factor for developing Parkinson’s disease. Based on their analysis ā€œthe greatest risk of Parkinson’s was found within 1 to 3 miles of a golf courseā€. The odds of developing Parkinson’s disease increased 126% for people living within 1 mile of a golf course compared to greater than 6 miles aways. These findings suggest that ā€œpesticides applied to golf courses may play a role in the incidence PD for nearby residentsā€.
