Due to COVID-19 Pandemic we are advised to protect ourselves with face masks. But frequent use of face mask are causing acne break outs or any rash related issues like rosacea, or perioral dermatitis. 80% of my patients I see in my clinic are complaining of these dilemma.
However experts says that duration of time wearing a mask doesn't directly correlate to acne development. (Dr Walter J. Liszewski, MD, Northwestern Medicine).
Here are my advice for home remedies:
1. Use mask made with hypoallergenic materials like silicon or cotton. Some commercial face mask are pre-treated with formaldehyde to disinfect them. These chemicals could spark breakouts. Also, there are synthetic fabrics that can cause allergies.
2. Use Acne soap or Mild soap prescribed by Skin Experts.
3. Avoid using over-the-counter or online skin care products. Make sure the product has been recommended and approved by dermatologist/skin experts
4. Avoid using whitening skin care creams or soap while you put on your face mask. The humidity inside the mask added with the cream will sometimes cause irritations on your skin. These are most common cause of dermatitis on skin. If you still insist, ask for experts advice so you can protect your skin.
5. Wash your washable mask with mild unscented detergents. Using fabric conditioner, bleach or harsh and scented detergent can still remains on your mask and can cause dermatitis.
6. Keep your mask clean. Nasal mucus, saliva and sweat can get on your face mask wherever it touches your face. These can be good medium for bacteria.
7. Use moisturizer prescribed only by dermatologist/skin experts. Use non comedogenic (oil free) ones after washing.
8. Try not to prick at your acne or touch your face. This is a MUSt.
9. To reduce the amount of acne-causing bacteria on your skin, consult your dermatologist/skin experts. (My clinic also offer acne products.)
10. Avoid high glycemic products while on quarantine. Avoid junks and sweets.
