What Is HIV?
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks cells that help the body fight infection, making a person more vulnerable to other infections and diseases. It is spread by contact with certain bodily fluids of a person with HIV, most commonly during unprotected s*x (s*x without a condom or HIV medicine to prevent or treat HIV), or through sharing injection drug equipment.

If left untreated, HIV can lead to the disease AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

The human body can’t get rid of HIV and no effective HIV cure exists. So, once you have HIV, you have it for life.
Luckily, however, effective treatment with HIV medicine (called antiretroviral therapy or ART) is available. If taken as prescribed, HIV medicine can reduce the amount of HIV in the blood (also called the viral load) to a very low level. This is called viral suppression. If a person’s viral load is so low that a standard lab can’t detect it, this is called having an undetectable viral load. People with HIV who take HIV medicine as prescribed and get and keep an undetectable viral load can live long and healthy lives and will not transmit HIV to their HIV-negative partners through s*x.

Frequent blood donation may offer more than just the satisfaction of helping others—it could also make your blood cells healthier. A new study suggests that men who donate blood more than 100 times are more likely to carry beneficial mutations in a gene called DNMT3A, potentially reducing the risk of blood cancer.

Researchers from the Francis Crick Institute in London analyzed genetic data from blood cells donated by 217 men, aged 60 to 72, who had donated blood over 100 times. They compared this to data from 212 men of similar age who had donated fewer than 10 times. The results showed that frequent donors had blood cells more likely to carry DNMT3A mutations.

To investigate further, the team grew blood stem cells with and without these mutations in lab conditions, adding a hormone called EPO, which is released after blood loss. The cells with the frequent-donor mutations grew 50% faster in the presence of EPO, suggesting that regular blood donation enhances the growth of healthy blood cells.

Additionally, when these mutated cells were mixed with cells carrying mutations linked to leukemia, the frequent-donor cells grew substantially faster and were more efficient at producing red blood cells. This implies that the mutations may not only promote healthy cell growth but could also suppress the development of cancerous cells.

While the findings suggest potential health benefits of frequent blood donation, experts call for further research with larger and more diverse cohorts to confirm these results. They also note that this benefit may not apply to all blood donors, especially those without the DNMT3A mutation.
