Umiitim ang balat ng isang dialysis patient dahil sa pagkakabuo ng labis na lason sa katawan, lalo na ang uremic toxins at beta-2 microglobulin, na hindi ganap na natatanggal ng dialysis. Bukod dito, nagkakaroon ng pagbabago sa kulay ng balat dahil sa anemia, panghihina ng atay, at pagkakabara ng mga sweat glands, kaya hindi normal ang paglabas ng toxins sa balat.

Maari ring makaapekto ang ilang gamot, kakulangan sa araw, at pag-ipon ng melanin o iron sa balat.
