Many people notice a small round scar on their upper arm and assume it is a birthmark, but it is often the result of the Bacille Calmette Guérin or BCG injection received during infancy. The BCG vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine primarily used to protect infants and young children from severe forms of tuberculosis, particularly TB meningitis. It is usually administered intradermally in the upper arm, where it commonly leaves a permanent scar as part of the body’s immune response to the vaccine.

The BCG vaccine is widely used in countries with high tuberculosis prevalence and is estimated to be 70 to 80 percent effective in preventing severe TB in children. However, it does not consistently protect against adult pulmonary tuberculosis. In the United States, the vaccine is rarely given and is reserved for specific high risk cases. Beyond TB prevention, BCG is also used in certain bladder cancer treatments, highlighting its continued medical importance decades after its development.
