AVOCADO FOR DESERT, HEALTH AND BEAUTY

AS I was mixing my avocado flesh with milk, honey and walnuts excitedly, my Italian friend watched me in curiosity and awe – for in the US, Europe, South America, Australia and even in Japan, avocados are used mainly in sandwiches, salad, dips and soups, but hardly in a dessert!

🥑 Avocado (Persea Americana), which comes from the Spanish word – aguacate – originated from Nahuatl word – ahuacatl, which also refers to testicles – perhaps because of the similarity in shape of the body part and the fruit. It is also known as alligator fruit, avocado pear or butter fruit. Originating from South-Central Mexico, this fruit is popular in Mexican dishes, a base to a guacamole dip, usually paired with corn tortillas chips – a wonderful treat to the tummy – not only because of its savory taste, but also for its supportive effect to the digestive system.

I know some people who are hesitant to eat avocado, because of its high fat content. While this is true, avocado contains monounsaturated fats or good fats, which is necessary for the function of the body systems. This heavenly fruit contains more than 20 vitamins and minerals.

The right amount of intake is 50 grams or 1/3 portion, medium size avocado, daily or as prescribed by your health caregiver.

🟩Health benefits

🔹Bones and joints: Avocado is rich in anti-inflammatory properties, such as phytosterols, beta-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol. Studies show that oil extracts from avocado alleviate arthritis and joints pain, boost bone health, and ward off osteoporosis.

🔹Digestion and weight loss: Plentiful in insoluble fiber, avocado prevents constipation and a good cleansing agent for the stomach. Fiber takes longer to digest. It gives a feeling of fullness, which prevents you from excessive eating, makes you shed weight. It is low in carbs, hence, kicks up weight loss.

🔹Cardiovascular system: Powered with anti-oxidants and high in healthy fat, avocado lowers cardio-vascular inflammation, neutralizes LDL, HDL and triglycerides levels and strengthens the heart. It reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

🔹Blood pressure: Loaded with potassium and low in sodium, it eases tension in the blood vessel and circulation, which stabilizes blood pressure.

🔹Eye sight: Packed with vitamin A, lutein and zeaxanthin, the two potent antioxidants, protect the tissues of the eyes from macular degeneration due to aging, damage from the ultra violet light exposure and free radicals.

🔹Pregnancy and depression: Abundant with folic acid or folate, avocado nutrients aid in the fetal development, block potential birth defects on babies, stimulate bone health of the mother and decrease depression. Folate stops the build-up of homocysteine that obstruct the flow of blood to the brain which affects mental health.

🟩Beauty glow

🔹For radiant and youthful skin: Mash one avocado fruit meat, add a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice, blend it together. Afterwards, apply it on your clean face, neckand body. Let it stay for 15 minutes and wash it off with warm water and natural soap.

Choose to be healthy and beautiful always. Eat your avocado. 🥑

Namaste.

THE BEAUTY OF NON-ATTACHMENT

FOR THOUSANDS of years, Buddhist monks have been practicing detachment, by excluding themselves from the world, to avoid distractions and attachment to material things, people, events, places, experiences; to attain enlightenment and become like Buddha, their enlightened spiritual inspiration. 🙏

Teacher Pasang, of the Kopan Monastery of the Dalai Lama in Kathmandu, Nepal, is my first Buddhism teacher. Under the shade of the beautiful Bodhi trees in the garden of the monastery, with his calm, soothing voice, he disclosed the law of nature and karma. He said we should always be mindful and aware of our daily choices in life, for it is so easy to get blinded and get attached to the glittering lights of falsehood, thinking it will give us long lasting happiness. Instead, it leads us to endless sufferings and danger.

My second Buddhist teacher is Ngawang Jigdral, a Tulku (reincarnated lama), who belongs to Nyingmaya Buddhist sect, schooled in Takse Monastery in Sikkim and the head lama of Pema Namdiding monastery in Kharikhala, Everest region, Nepal, of which I am a lucky life member.

According to Tulku, it is important to exercise and live with compassion at all times. Only then Ahimsa (non–violence) is possible. That compassion leads to the light of purification while ahimsa gives peace to the world and to the self. Be kind and happy, opt for a simple quiet way of living. Peace of mind is essential to all creations, hence, by being peaceful you give peace to the whole.

I asked Father Archie Cortez, the head friar and founder of Monasterio de Tarlac, in San Jose, Tarlac, about his spiritual insight on the subject. He saideverything in this world is temporary. From there we should realize that we shouldn’t be attached to anything, for everything is impermanent. We should focus on something that lasts. To deny ourselves, we should seek first the kingdom of God. What is the use of gaining the whole world if you lose your own soul. Attachment causes conflicts and un-contentment, it hinders spiritual growth.

Is it possible to live without attachment❓

⭐️Non- attachment is the ability to detach yourself from the things or situations that you cannot control but affect you in many ways....

❤️You can love someone without being attached and dependent, knowing that even the heights of love change. Obsession and neediness are the opposite of love. They give birth to insecurity, anger and disappointments. Love should be free and flowing to make it grow.

Being non-attached in love or anything means not clinging to any expectations or experience and to spontaneously let go of the unpleasant feelings that cause unhappiness and mental disturbances. By discovering the spiritual law of nature and with the spiritual intelligence applied, the true essence of all is fulfilled.

To achieve the detachment state of consciousness, a regular prayer or meditation is the path, for it gives strength in faith and empowers self-discipline. Only then will the staircase to eternal bliss get known and the seekers will seek no more.

OM Samadhi.

FOR THOUSANDS of years, Buddhist monks havebeen practicing detachment, by excluding themselves from the world, to avoid distractions and attachment to material things, people, events, places, experiences; to attain enlightenment and become like Buddha, their enlightened spiritual inspiration.

LOOKING AT the bright side of things amidst any chaos, like our current crisis due to the coronavirus, is one of the many admirable traits Filipinos are well known for. I guess this is our way of coping to survive, to shoo away fear, to prevent despair from enveloping us.

Seeing the bright side of matters is a form of strength in faith, believing that things are not as bad as they seem, convinced that everything will be alright anytime, anyhow.

🟩Positivity is inherent in us. We were born with it. Unfortunately, while growing up, various system of beliefs from family and society was fed to us, for which created a confused mind, losing our natural positive radiance.

🟩Positive begets positive🟩

In a work scenario, employees with positive attitude, most likely get promoted first – compared to the pessimists. This kind of people, usually go out of their way to motivate others, encourage to raise self-confidence and competitiveness in a pleasing manner. They are likeable, approachable, with infectious magnetic vibes.

💡Healthwise, researchers from Duke University in North Carolina and Columbia University in New York, conducted a study of 2,400 patients with angina – a heart disorder which causes severe chest pain. The research found that those with positive outlook are 40percent less likely to require hospital treatment.

Optimism reduces stress and the production of anxiety hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol – which raises blood pressure and causes burden in the heart.

💡A study in 2016 revealed that women who are optimistic are less likely to die of cancer, heart disease, stroke or other major causes of death.

As a matter of fact, the Harvard University suggested that public health professionals should begin pushing positivity in patients alongside a healthy diet and exercise. Positive attitude obviously plays a huge role in every aspect of our being.

Granting that culture, beliefs, environment, experiences impact our behavior and perception on things, it shouldn’t be a reason to deprive yourself from choosing to see the bright side of life.

🔵9 Helpful Tips to Achieve a Positive Mindset:

🔹Train your mind to be positive. Share your upbeat approach of seeing beauty in everything to others. Exhibit kindness and gratitude at all times.

🔹Find the silver lining. Look for the best favorable angle in any negative situation.

🔹Be mindful. You might be stressing out about something that we cannot change, has not happened yet, or does not exist.

🔹Focus on the right path. When negative events are swallowing you up, remind yourself that your response determines the outcome. Always opt for the positive response and the lesson the moment is teaching you.

🔹Exercise regularly. It stimulates endorphins which enhances happy mood, as well as promote mental and physical health, lowers the rate of depression and strengthens the muscles.

🔹Choose a holistic diet. Food can influence the way you think and act. Avoid foods which disrupt the natural rhythm of your body, like caffeine, processed food, red meat, oily and salty foods. Instead, eat more plant–based foods.

🔹Cultivate a loving relationship. For a peaceful heart illuminates a brilliant perspective.

🔹Avoid negative thinkers. Negativity is infectious. If you live with them, let them know in a gentle manner how it affects you.

🔹Surround yourself with good-humored people. For laughter is the best medicine after all. Its potency revitalizes the immune system, enlivens the spirit, which makes you live longer.

If only we can master how to train the eyes to see deeper than what the external sight could offer. That there’s a dazzling beauty behind every occurrence in life – sufferings will perish, peace and tranquility will prevail.

Namaste.

ZINC is one of the most important component in the mineral kingdom and highly recommended by health care providers, as an immunity booster, to combat and guard oneself from all kinds of viruses – like Covid-19 – best taken together with vitamin C, D, E, magnesium and B-complex.

YOU ARE so lucky, you already found your “ikigai,” Hiroko-san said, right after her
healing session with me, on my previous trip to Japan.

Ikigai is a Japanese word which literally means “life worth” or “life purpose.” It is a concept of enjoying activities you are passionate about and a profession you are good at. A reason to get up every morning inspired and high spirited.

Even more, it is something that brings self-fulfillment, contentment, and a sense of well-being, Moreso, you get paid for it, and the demand for that specific job passion is big. These are the dynamics of ikigai.

To make it more understandable, an example: I am a natural medicine healer. I love what I do. It was my dream since I was a child. My work doesn’t feel like a job at all. With my regular practice, I mastered my craft so well and confident with my know how. There is huge demand for healers like me in the globe. Though healing is my passion, it is also my profession, so I get paid for it. These are the overlapping ikigai components.

HOW TO FIND YOUR IKIGAI❓

There are four spheres that could assist you in this.
Foremost, I suggest that you do a self-reflection first.
To clearly see your truth, and the reason and mission of your existence.

To unfold your ikigai, ask these questions:
What is it that you sincerely love to do❓
Which field are you good at and will be happy about❓
Does the world or society need it? Will it take care of you financially to cover your living expenses❓

Be honest with your answers. For your flow will be based on them. It might be difficult for others to follow the principles of ikigai. Keep in mind that with consistent action and belief in you – an abundant harvest awaits.

Your passion and where you are great at might be different. It is alright. You can do both. For instance, playing the piano is your passion but you are not competitive yet. Hence, it doesn’t give any economic reward. On the other hand, you are outstanding in the art of life coaching. It pays handsomely too. Balance is the key.

What if your passion and where you excel is not in demand and doesn’t produce profits? According to the Ikigai traditional discipline adapted from Zen Buddhism philosophy, what the world needs and monetary reward doesn’t include and do not have anything to do with the practice.

As a matter of fact, the core teachings are: To learn how to embrace joy in every small experience in life, to be present and aware of the here and now, to possess a positive frame of mind, and most importantly, to stay active that will make you want to live a hundred years.

May you find the reason for your being and live the best life you’ve been desiring for.
Namaste.
