Last Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the College of Veterinary Medicine successfully conducted the “Doctor of Veterinary Medicine: A Program for All Genders – Pre-Employment and OJT Preparation Seminar,” a significant event designed to help senior clinicians transition confidently into post-graduate life and guide junior clinicians as they prepare for their on-the-job training.

With insightful talks, personal reflections, and expert guidance, the seminar provided essential tools and perspectives to help participants navigate the next stages of their veterinary journey.

We were honored by the presence of the University President and Vice President, whose support reflects the institution’s continued commitment to the holistic growth and empowerment of its students.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to our esteemed resource speakers, who represented various specialties within veterinary medicine, as well as experts from the Gender and Development (GAD) Program, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Engineering. Their diverse backgrounds enriched the discussions on professionalism, time management, and inclusivity in the workplace.
Thank you to the following speakers:

We've been fighting the dreaded rabies infection since Gov.-Gen. Rafael Maria de Aguilar issued an order to kill the dogs in the Philippines on 16 August 1800. The Spanish authorities observed the sudden surge of infection a few years before. The infection was recorded in Ilocos as early as 1792.

Our dogs, especially the Aspins, have endured killings. They are survivors of history, so to speak. Along with cats, dogs are the potential carriers of rabies if unvaccinated. Homeless dogs in the neighborhood are at high risk of contracting rabies, and culturally, we want our dogs to roam freely.

Let's join hands with the government in combating rabies by being responsible pet owners and vaccinating our dogs and cats regularly. Let's also give hope to the over 13.11 million stray dogs and cats in the Philippines (per the latest study in 2024) by supporting various adoption and spay-and-neuter campaigns.

Read more about the history of rabies in the Philippines via our book Dogs in Philippine History. It is still available via shopee.com/dogsphi .

MAN WHO BLUDGEONED STRAY CAT TO DEATH GOES INTO HIDING; LOCATED AND ARRESTED BY POLICE

A disturbing case of animal cruelty is now moving forward thanks to the courage of a concerned citizen, Celine, who is standing with PAWS for justice. Celine filed a case alongside PAWS just this March against her neighbor, Keyvic, for the alleged brutal killing of a beloved stray cat named Puti. Puti, a gentle and friendly cat, was known to wait for Celine’s return home from work each and every day. When Puti failed to show up as usual, Celine became alarmed.

Upon reviewing CCTV footage, she was devastated to discover that it had caught the moment when Keyvic had viciously struck Puti with a heavy metal object as the cat innocently walked along the sidewalk. The footage showed Puti convulsing and passing shortly after the blow, and Keyvic then callously trying to sweep her away and disposing of her body in a black trash bag. Puti left behind three young kittens.

Celine immediately sought justice and reached out to PAWS for assistance in filing formal charges against her neighbor. Following the case filing, Keyvic reportedly attempted to convince Celine to drop the charges and subsequently went into hiding, but he was soon tracked down and arrested by authorities.

Celine has remained resolute in her pursuit of justice for Puti, saying she will not back down until accountability is served.

ANIMAL CRUELTY IS A CRIME, AND YOU CANNOT RUN FROM JUSTICE.

If you witness animal cruelty, please speak up. You may be the only voice these defenseless beings have. No animal deserves to suffer, let alone die at the hands of violence.

PAWS is always committed to supporting brave individuals willing to stand up against cruelty. If you need legal assistance for an animal cruelty case, please visit paws.org.ph/prosecution

Rest in peace, Puti. Your life mattered, and we are fighting with Celine to ensure that justice is served for you and for all the innocent victims of animal cruelty.
