The University of the Philippines joins the nation in remembering former Senator Benigno Simeon "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr., who was assassinated on August 21, 1983 at what was then the Manila International Airport.

This year, in the interest of promoting domestic tourism, Malacañang has issued Proclamation 665, moving the observance of Ninoy Aquino Day from August 21, Wednesday, to August 23, Friday.

According to university records, Aquino took courses in what was then the UP College of Liberal Arts and the UP College of Law. But he did not finish his law studies, after deciding to pursue journalism as a profession. He earned a total of 126 academic units from the university.

In 1988, Aquino was posthumously honored by the UP Alumni Association (UPAA) with an Oblation Award, which was received by none other than his widow, then President of the Republic of the Philippines, Corazon C. Aquino.

The UP Visayas administration expresses grave concern over the statement made by Jeffrey Celiz in a recent interview citing the University as one of the NPA recruitment centers in the island of Panay. UPV is a safe space where students are empowered to exercise critical thinking in a democratic learning environment. Making such a dangerous and baseless generalization exposes our students and other constituents to unnecessary risks, and maligns an institution that has been a reliable partner of national and local government agencies in addressing various environmental and social concerns.

I call on the relevant entities and on the members of the security establishment, as well as on our leaders in Congress, not to dignify unverified, irresponsible, and dangerous statements made by the likes of Mr. Celiz.

In a release by the Presidential Communications Office dated August 8, 2024 President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. named Dr. Carmencita David Padilla (BS Pre-medicine, 1976; MD, 1981; MAHPS, 2005) and Dr. Romulo Gelbolingo Davide (BSA, 1957) the country’s newest National Scientists. They were recognized for their significant contributions to the fields of genetics, and nematology and plant pathology, respectively.
