Thiamine (vitamin B1) is a water-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in converting carbohydrates into energy, supplying and supporting the body to maintain normal cellular functions and daily activities. Inside the body, thiamine is converted into its active form, thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), which functions as a coenzyme in several key metabolic reactions. It plays an important role in the breakdown of carbohydrates to produce ATP, the body’s main energy source. Thiamine is also essential for proper nerve function, as it helps in the transmission of nerve signals and supports brain activity. Organs with high energy demands, such as the brain and heart, rely heavily on adequate thiamine levels to function properly.
Thiamine deficiency can occur due to poor diet, chronic alcohol consumption, or conditions that impair nutrient absorption. Low levels of thiamine can disrupt energy metabolism and affect the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Severe deficiency may lead to Beriberi, which can cause muscle weakness, heart problems, and nerve damage. It may also result in Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, a serious neurological condition associated with confusion, memory loss, and impaired coordination.
