𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💊

Esomeprazole is an oral medication used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and for prevention of stomach ulcers caused by long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Esomeprazole helps relieve symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough, and promotes healing of acid-related damage in the stomach and esophagus. It may also be used in combination with antibiotics to treat 𝐻𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑦𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑖 infection under medical supervision.

It works by blocking the enzyme system known as the gastric proton pump (H⁺/K⁺-ATPase) located in the stomach lining. This enzyme is responsible for the final step in the production of gastric acid. By inhibiting this pump, esomeprazole significantly reduces acid secretion, allowing irritated tissues in the esophagus and stomach to heal. As the S-isomer of omeprazole, esomeprazole provides prolonged acid suppression, helping control symptoms and prevent complications related to excessive stomach acid.

Taking esomeprazole may cause some side effects, especially with long-term use. Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, constipation, dry mouth, or gas. Some individuals may also experience dizziness or mild skin reactions. Less commonly, serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions, kidney problems, low magnesium levels, vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures, or severe diarrhea caused by infection may occur. If symptoms such as chest pain, severe stomach pain, persistent diarrhea, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, or signs of an allergic reaction develop, immediate medical attention should be sought.

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💊💉

The main trigger for the body's "fight or flight" reaction is epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, which is a naturally occurring hormone and neurotransmitter. This chemical messenger, which was first discovered in the late 1800s by Oliver and Schäfer's research, is secreted by the adrenal medulla and is essential for controlling mood, heart rate, and metabolism. It serves as a link between psychological moods and urgent bodily needs in the central nervous system.

Nonetheless, the delicate balance of natural epinephrine is essential; persistently low levels are frequently associated with mental and physical health issues, such as sleep problems, hypoglycemia, and ongoing anxiety.

Synthetic epinephrine mimics the sympathetic nervous system in clinical situations by acting as a potent sympathomimetic medication that selectively targets alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. Because it relaxes the bronchi's smooth muscles to restore breathing and causes vasoconstriction to counteract low blood pressure, it is the gold standard for treating anaphylaxis.

Although its potency necessitates close medical management, it acts as a life-saving histamine antagonist during severe allergic responses or asthma crises. It should only be used in emergency situations or for certain prescriptions since it causes a quick systemic change and might produce serious adverse effects like tremors, heart palpitations, or hypertension.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲!💊

Levodropropizine is a peripheral-targeting non-opioid used to treat coughs ranging from acute to chronic in both adults and children. It works by inhibiting activation of the sensory C-fiber within the tracheal nerves, decreasing both the intensity and the frequency of the coughs without any significant side effects focused on the central nervous system.

However, adverse reactions may still occur such as: dizziness, headaches, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, heartburn, and fatigue.

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲! 🫀💊

Amiodarone is a potent Class III anti-arrhythmic agent primarily indicated for the management of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias, such as ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, which disrupt the heart's ability to pump blood effectively. Being a derivative of benzofuran, it works by obstructing potassium channels in the cardiac cycle's third phase. By extending the action potential's duration, this function successfully stabilizes the electrical activity of the heart and delays the beginning of irregular rhythms. Beyond its electrical characteristics, amiodarone can inhibit T3 receptors because of a special chemical resemblance to thyroid hormones. By simulating a hypothyroid condition, this interaction can reduce cardiac metabolism and add another level of rhythm control.

However, because of its wide range of drug-drug interactions, amiodarone's clinical benefits come with a high level of care. Patients must reveal all of their medications, including those that may require quick dosage modifications or alternative therapies to prevent adverse reactions, such as Atazanavir, Bepridil, Cisapride, and Colchicine. Additionally, due to its distinct metabolic pathway, patients need to be closely watched for adverse effects such as coughing, lightheadedness, or uncontrollable bodily movements. A comprehensive medical history that focuses on thyroid, lung, and liver function is necessary before starting treatment in order to assure patient safety because pre-existing problems in these areas can greatly raise the risk of catastrophic consequences.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💊

Trimetazidine is a prescribed metabolic oral medication used to treat angina pectoris through the support of myocardial glucose utilization during ischemic-related conditions. It partially reduces fatty acid beta oxidation, therefore lessening chest pain

Trimetazidine functions through its anti-ischemic properties by inhibiting fatty acid beta oxidation, specifically blocking the 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase in the mitochondria. This results in a shift to glucose oxidation, or glycolysis, in cardiac metabolism in order to restore ATP production in oxygen-deprived cells.

Common side effects tend to include dizziness, headaches, stomach pain, diarrhea, indigestion and vomiting, with more severe side effects pertaining to rashing, itching, hives, and a general feeling of weakness.

Everolimus is an orally-prescribed medication used to treat various types of cancer (e.g., brain cancer) and tumor diseases (e.g., neuroendocrine tumor). It is also used to prevent organ rejection during transplant. It is a derivative of Rapamycin, a potent immunosuppressant drug from the gram-positive bacteria 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑝𝑡𝑜𝑚𝑦𝑐𝑒𝑠 ℎ𝑦𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑝𝑖𝑐𝑢𝑠.

Similar to Rapamycin, Everolimus binds strongly with FK506-binding protein to form a complex which will inhibit the serine/threonine-protein kinase mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), the regulatory enzyme involved in physiological functions such as cell growth, metabolism, autophagy, and protein synthesis. Hence, the common side effects involve cough, fever, and diarrhea. It is important not to consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking this medication as it inhibits the enzyme which breaks down Everolimus (CYP3A4), which may lead to increased drug concentration.

Currently, Everolimus is studied for its potential treatment against autoimmune hepatitis, tuberculosis, chronic-graft-versus-host disease, and as an anti-aging immune enhancement.

𝐗𝐏𝐑𝐓 𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐘𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐄𝐒 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 joins the global community in observing World Cancer Day on February 4, 2026, a worldwide call to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and support better access to cancer care.

This year’s World Cancer Day theme, “United by Unique,” as highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO), reminds us that every person’s experience with cancer is different. It highlights the importance of placing people at the center of care, listening to their needs, respecting their journeys, and providing support that is compassionate, inclusive, and accessible.

In the Philippines, World Cancer Day is supported by the Philippine Cancer Society (PCS), which continues to lead efforts in cancer awareness, prevention, patient support, and advocacy. PCS works with government agencies, health professionals, and communities to help improve cancer education and access to care nationwide.

World Cancer Day also marks the beginning of National Cancer Awareness Month, observed throughout February under the National Integrated Cancer Control Act (RA 11215). Led by the Department of Health and its partners, this month-long observance helps sustain awareness by promoting cancer prevention, early screening, timely treatment, and patient support across the country.

Through World Cancer Day and National Cancer Awareness Month, XPRT Analytical Services Corporation encourages everyone to take part by learning more about cancer, supporting screening and early consultation, and standing with individuals and families affected by the disease.

Together, we can support a future where every person facing cancer is seen, heard, and cared for.

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💊

In the late 1950s to the early 1960s, thalidomide was a drug used to treat nausea in pregnant women. However, this drug was soon banned worldwide by the end of the decade after it caused drastic birth defects in thousands of children. In the 1980s, thalidomide was discovered to have anti-angiogenic properties and is now used to treat multiple myeloma, a type of rare blood cancer, by preventing blood vessels from growing in tumors. Thalidomide is also used to treat Hansen’s disease, also known as leprosy.

The antitumor mechanism of thalidomide is not fully understood, but studies suggest that it mainly works by binding to cerebron, a part of a multi-protein complex responsible for degrading proteins, to break down transcription factors responsible for the multiplication of cancerous myeloma cells. Thalidomide has two forms, the (R)- and (S)-enantiomers, which rapidly interconvert within the body. The (R) form of thalidomide prevents nausea, while the (S) form causes birth defects. The severe effects of the (S) form of thalidomide to embryos is not fully understood, but studies suggest its anti-angiogenic effects might be a contributing factor.

Thalidomide caused a wide range of birth defects in over 10,000 children by the 1960s, and malformities were mostly seen in the limbs, face, eyes, ears, genitalia, internal organs, and skeletal structure. Because of the thalidomide tragedy, stricter regulatory frameworks were established for drug testing, marketing, dispensing, and use.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💊

Clofazomine is an oral medication requiring a doctor’s prescription used to treat the bacterial and inflammatory effects of Leprosy due to the gram-positive bacteria 𝑀𝑦𝑐𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑙𝑒𝑝𝑟𝑎𝑒. It is primary co-administered with dapsone and rifampicin to treat Leprosy, and is also used to treat dapsone-resistance leprosy, erythema nodosum leprosum, and non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections.

Although the specific mode of action of Clofazomine has not yet been discovered, it has been theorized that its antibacterial effects is either because (1) its lipophilic property generates intracellular reactive oxygen species to produce hydrogen peroxide and superoxide that has antimicrobial properties, and (2) it interacts with the phospholipids of the bacteria then generates antimicrobial lysophospholipids by interfering with the bacterial ATP production, specifically through its K+ uptake. Its anti-inflammatory effect is theorized either because it (1) directly binds to the Kv 1.3 channel of T-lymphocytes to inhibit the flow of potassium ions or (2) promotes the release of prostaglandins and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).

As we celebrated World Leprosy day last Sunday, January 25, let us continue to show support to the patients of Leprosy and their loved ones by spreading awareness about its cause and effects.

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💊

Propylthiouracil is a medication used to treat thyroid disorders caused by an overproduction of thyroid hormone, such as Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism. It is also used to treat patients with hyperthyroidism before thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine therapy.

Hyperthyroidism affects nearly every organ in the body since thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, i.e., how the body uses energy. Serious health problems can occur due to an overactive thyroid gland, such as heart-related problems, muscle problems, and fertility issues. Hyperthyroidism can be caused by Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid gland.

In thyroid hormone production, iodide is combined with the amino acid tyrosine to form diiodotyrosine (DIT) or monoiodotyrosine (MIT), important components of thyroid hormones T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). Propylthiouracil works by inhibiting the enzyme thyroid peroxidase from converting iodine into iodide, slowing down the production of thyroid hormone. This drug also stops the peripheral conversion of the less active thyroid hormone T4 into the more active thyroid hormone T3.

Propylthiouracil is part of a class of antithyroid drugs called thionamides, which include methimazole and carbimazole. These drugs are used to reduce thyroid activity, an alternative treatment to hyperthyroidism that does not involve the destruction of the thyroid gland.
