“Words take time and deserve to be heard”
More than 70 million people worldwide stutter; Generally, stuttering begins in childhood—and manifests in various ways. We must be aware of how we could communicate better with them.
Here are some simple ways we can ensure they finish their sentences without interruption, even from well-intentioned individuals:
Be patient. It may take longer for a person to voice out their thoughts, but we must give them the courtesy of your time and understanding.
Don’t speak for them. You might believe you’re doing them a favor by finishing their sentence but it's important not to assume what they’re trying to say.
Be kind. You should never mock someone who is struggling to get their words out, as its never acceptable.
Be mindful of your body language. Always tay engaged in the conversation, make eye contact, and remain patient, showing that you're actively listening and supportive.
