Retinoblastoma in Children: Early Warning Signs Parents Should Know

Retinoblastoma is a rare but serious eye cancer that mostly affects children under 5. Early detection saves both vision and life.

⚠️ Warning signs parents should watch for:
👁️ A white glow in the pupil (like a cat’s eye in photos)
👀 Crossed or misaligned eyes
❌ Poor vision or eye movement issues
🔴 Redness and swelling without infection
If you notice any of these, consult an ophthalmologist immediately.

A PUBLIC ADVISORY FROM THE PHILIPPINE ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY: Beware of unproven eye medicine, eye drops, and eye devices that are being peddled as a cure-all or prevention of different eye conditions. Consult your ophthalmologist for the proper care of your eyes.

Diabetic Retinopathy: Why Regular Eye Exams Matter for People with Diabetes

Have diabetes? You could have diabetic retinopathy without even knowing it.

It damages blood vessels in the retina—leading to blindness if untreated.
But here’s the good news: Early detection can prevent vision loss!

Schedule a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year.

Manage blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
Vision is worth protecting—don’t skip your eye exams!

OUR STORY...

A number of eye doctors started their practice in Malolos, Bulacan in the late 90’s. Ten years after, they realized that their practice was limited to outpatient cases only. Those for procedures and further work ups and consult to subspecialty were obliged to go to Manila. Most of their patients were elderly. Realizing the ordeal their patients had to go through, they planned on putting up an Eye Center in the very strategic location in Malolos , Bulacan.

In 2010, the structure and equipments were completed. In 2011, the eye center was fully operational complete with accreditations from the Department of Health, Philhealth, and HMO’s .

After a few years, subspecialty cases like Diabetes, Glaucoma, Orbit , Plastic Reconstructive, and Pediatric Ophthalmology cases were attended by specialists. Special and difficult cases like Corneal transplantation, Squint Surgeries( “banlag/duling”), Retinal Surgeries are regularly done in the center. Patients need not go to Manila to avail of these services because they were made available in the Eye Center.

Realizing that most of the patients were elderly, the amount of time and money involved in going to manila was greatly reduced. This made the services for Eye Care more accessible to the patients and at the same time having competent Eye Doctors and staff made Bartimaeus Eye Center a one stop shop for Eye health services.
