There are certain portions of the Torah that the kabbalists teach contain within them the entire history of humanity—from the beginning of time until the End of Correction. Ha’Azinu, the portion we read this Shabbat, is one of those portions. Hidden within its verses lies the destiny of every soul. Before entering this world, each soul made a promise to the Creator, and the essence of that promise is contained within this reading.

But what does destiny truly mean? Often, we believe we know what we want to achieve—physically or spiritually—and we carefully map out how we intend to do it. Yet that is not destiny. Destiny is not a matter of personal choice. Before our soul descended, the Creator said: “This is what you need to do in the world.” We understood and accepted it. That is destiny.

Even if the world praises us for our accomplishments, even if people tell us how much good we have done, that alone is not the true measure. As Rav Zusha taught: “In the coming world, they will not ask me: Why were you not Moses? They will ask me: Why were you not Zusya?”

This is the crucial distinction between simply doing good and truly fulfilling our destiny. Our purpose here is not only to be good or even spiritual people. The real question we must ask is not: Am I doing good things? but rather: Am I fulfilling the promise my soul made? Am I living the commitment I gave to the Creator before I came into this world? Am I embodying that spark of Light within me?

As we enter the new year, this is the consciousness we are invited to hold. We don’t want to use the Light we’ve received merely for blessings, protection, or even to help others. These are meaningful, but they are not the ultimate purpose. Our true work is to align with the deeper promise—the unique mission our soul accepted before its descent—to become like the Light itself and to fulfill the very Thought of Creation.

On this Shabbat of Ha’Azinu, we are given the opportunity to awaken to that promise. How? Through a sincere desire for it to be revealed to us.

That is the gift of Shabbat Ha’Azinu: to discover our destiny and return to the promise our soul made before it entered this world.

Why "More" Isn't Always the Answer: A Fresh Look at Abundance

In a world constantly telling us to "manifest our dreams" and "attract abundance," it's easy to believe that simply wanting something hard enough will bring it to us, and that more is always better. We're flooded with messages encouraging us to visualize wealth, success, and personal gain.

But what if there's a deeper truth that's often overlooked? What if the way we want, and why we want it, matters more than the "what"?

Imagine a beautiful, finely crafted cup. It's designed to hold precious liquid, to serve a purpose beyond just existing. Now imagine that cup has a crack at the bottom. No matter how much water you pour in, it just leaks out, unable to hold its contents for its intended use.

In a spiritual sense, we are like that cup. Our desires and intentions are our "vessels" for abundance – whether it's money, love, opportunities, or anything else we wish for. If our fundamental desire is purely for ourselves – to accumulate, to gain, to satisfy only our own needs – it's like that cracked cup. No matter how much "abundance" flows in, it can't truly be held or used for lasting fulfillment. It just "leaks out" or even fuels something that leaves us feeling empty in the long run.

This perspective suggests that true "holiness" or spiritual alignment isn't just about receiving, but about giving. It's about wanting to receive in order to share, to contribute, to uplift, or to serve a greater purpose. When our intentions are focused outward, our "cup" becomes whole, capable of holding and truly benefiting from abundance.

We're all born with a natural inclination to want for ourselves – it's part of being human. But this teaching reminds us that real, meaningful abundance comes when we consciously work to transform that self-focused desire into a desire to contribute.

A Personal Test
Here's a thought experiment for yourself: Think about something you've deeply desired, worked hard for, and finally achieved. When you got it, how did you truly feel? Did the high last, or did that intense feeling of satisfaction quickly fade, leaving you looking for the next "thing" to chase, the next high to pursue?

If that immediate rush often gives way to a familiar emptiness, it might be a sign that the kind of desire we're acting on isn't built for lasting fulfillment.

So, the next time you're manifesting, ask yourself: "Why do I want this? What will I do with this abundance? Will it serve only me, or can it become a tool for something greater?"

Perhaps true abundance isn't just about getting, but about transforming how we get and why we want.

Reiki is not just a healing method—it is the energy of life itself. It is the limitless love of the Source, the force that flows through all living things. It is around us, within us, and in between all beings. It is what connects every person, every animal, every tree, every drop of water, and every star in the sky. Reiki is the breath of life that unites us all with the Creator.

When we practice Reiki, we are not creating this energy—we are simply tuning into it, allowing it to flow through us. We become channels for the love, harmony, and balance that already exists in the universe. We align ourselves with that pure and loving frequency, so it can move freely through us and into the world.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗜𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱?

At the end of our evolution, we will be compelled to unite as one group with threads of love tying us together. The question is: what will bring us to that point? When and how exactly will we begin to move toward such a state, which is so very opposite from what we see in the world today? Also, why would it even be worthwhile?

By nature, we care about ourselves and cannot do anything unless we feel a certain benefit from it. We need energy for every movement, whether it be physical, emotional, or mental, and such energy is available to us only when we see a better state ahead.

Sometimes this internal calculation happens automatically, without our awareness, for instance, when the body shifts the position of a hand or leg. At other times, we are aware of the calculation and act accordingly. For instance, we speak or behave in a certain way toward someone because it benefits us to present ourselves in such a way.

Our entire life is about maximizing pleasure with minimal effort, that we experience less suffering with more enjoyment. What exactly gives us pleasure? That is where social values, our upbringing, and our innate tendencies come into play. Together, these shape our internal definitions of what is good and bad.

Therefore, it is in our nature to always look for ways to feel better. This is how every living creature operates, including humans. We can even describe it as a universal law, i.e., that we seek to feel as comfortable and complete as possible. This is where our egoistic nature constantly leads us.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲?

Back to the initial question: how can we change our nature and start caring for others instead of ourselves? To love others? To think about their well-being? To dedicate all of our abilities and resources to others, so much so that nothing remains for ourselves except a single point of desire to bestow goodness on everyone?

We might compare this to a mother caring for her baby. Her nature constantly guides her to worry about them, what they need, how to soothe them, and what else she can do to help. She has no other concern, as her baby fills her whole world.

If a similar attitude of love is required toward all of society, it clearly seems unrealistic. So why is it said that “Love your neighbor as yourself” is actually the general law of reality, a law we will eventually be forced to follow?

Another question also arises, that if love is really the great goal we are destined to reach, why have we arrived at the complete opposite of that state, where people have such inflated egos that they exploit others more and more, striving to dominate them, even enjoying their success at others’ expense? Do you know any other creature in nature that thrives on others having less, that derives pleasure from their failure, or measures their own success only in comparison to others?

𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱

If we were to fantasize for a moment about this utopian state, where everyone loves everyone, it might indeed feel like the ultimate self-fulfillment. Perhaps. But what means do we have to achieve that?

Over the generations, several books have been written on the topic. There were even attempts to create villages, cities, even countries where people could live with mutual care, but all such efforts failed.

Over time, we became smarter and better understood our egoistic nature. We realized that we could not rise above it. So we moved toward limiting individuals through laws and punishments to reduce harm to others and to society.

We now have lawyers, accountants, sociologists, psychologists, and politicians, i.e., entire systems managing relationships in cities, countries, and the world, letting us coexist and even profit through shared resources. But on the inner emotional level, in terms of transforming our attitude toward others from egoistic and exploitative to loving and considerate, it seems that we have only regressed.

𝗔 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀

This brings us to the crisis we face today, a very strange, multi-faceted crisis highlighting a common root to the various problems across all aspects of life.

On one hand, we have built a highly interconnected world where we all depend on one another. On the other hand, each person’s ego has grown so strong that it prevents them from even seeing others. In a reality of global threats like nuclear war, economic collapse, or climate crisis, we can rapidly descend into very dangerous situations.

Even in private life, the growing ego causes immense difficulties, whether in relationships, parenting, schools, workplaces, business, and even on the roads. Wherever there is another person, tensions rise. Our ability to coexist with others is declining.

We could continue discussing the symptoms of growing egoism, but the core reason remains is the same. Life is bringing us to a crossroads. Either we begin working together to rise above our narrow egoism toward connection and love, or we will suffer until we eventually come to that realization.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆

So, what force can compel us to move toward mutual love?

As mentioned, humans are social beings influenced by the values instilled by their environment. Therefore, if we collectively change the social value system so that every bad attitude toward others becomes disgraceful and good relations are honored and respected, we will gain the power to develop in the right direction. If people feel, so to speak, a blow for bad behavior and a stroke for good, they will be forced to improve.

To achieve this, media, education systems, and cultural institutions, which are all tools at our disposal, must be enlisted. We need to condemn narrow egoism and uplift values like consideration, closeness, participation, support, assistance, and connection, eventually reaching love. This process requires us to study human nature and, based on our findings, develop society and its influence mechanisms accordingly.

Like it or not, life is placing us all in the same boat. This means we are all responsible for one another, by definition. What does this mean? If someone drills a hole in the boat beneath their own seat, water will flood in and sink us all. This is mutual responsibility in its negative egoistic expression. Our joint task is to realize its full positive potential.

𝗔 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆

As we progress, we will understand that our entire development as a species within nature has brought us to this exact point, a general crisis in egoistic relationships, from which we will give birth to a new person and a new humanity.

In the new web of connections we build between us, we will discover a flow of an internal force that dwells in nature's depths, a force of positive bestowal, love, and giving. It is a life force that gives rise to all development. We will acquire its qualities, draw closer to balance with it, and then understand that we had to develop in opposition to it, just so we could perceive its nature through contrast. By discerning these opposites—ego versus love—we will develop the ability to grasp how exalted, powerful, eternal, and complete is the force of love, and we will merge with it more and more.

Therefore, the law “Love your neighbor as yourself” becomes a necessary condition to reach humanity's next evolutionary stage, a harmonious and perfect state of fulfillment, enjoyment, and pleasure like nothing else in this world.

Elias had spent years struggling to make his small bakery thrive. Every time he seemed to gain momentum, something knocked him back—a sudden rent increase, a failed investment, or even his own doubts whispering that he wasn’t good enough.

One evening, after yet another financial setback, he stood alone in his shop, staring at the dim glow of the oven. He clenched his fists, feeling the weight of his suffering press down on him. "Why does this keep happening to me?" he muttered.

Then, an old customer walked in—an elderly man with kind eyes. He ordered a loaf of bread, and as Elias handed it to him, the man smiled. “You know, storms don’t come to break you. They come to move you.”

Elias frowned. “Move me where?”

“That depends on how you walk through them,” the man said. “If you only feel the rain, you suffer. If you see where the wind pushes you, you find a path.”

That night, Elias stopped seeing his failures as punishments. Instead, he studied each setback like a clue, adjusting his course. He moved his bakery to a smaller, more affordable location, focused on perfecting his signature recipe, and built a community around his work.

The hardships didn’t vanish, but he no longer suffered them—he walked with them. And in time, he realized he was exactly where he needed to be.
