HOW CAN SORE EYES BE PREVENTED?

Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water. Minimize hand-to-eye contact. Use your own towels, eyedrops, makeup and sunglasses. Disinfect surfaces, doorknobs, counters, elevator buttons, and handrails with dilute bleach solution. Wear eyeglasses or sunglasses on windy days to protect your eyes from foreign particles. Avoid crowded places. Wash clothes, towels, pillowcases, and anything else which may have come in contact with a person with sore eyes.

Talk to your ophthalmologist for more information.

A PUBLIC ADVISORY FROM THE PHILIPPINE ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY: Beware of unproven eye medicine, eye drops, and eye devices that are being peddled as a cure-all or prevention of the different eye conditions. Consult your ophthalmologist for the proper care of your eyes.

HOW IS SORE EYES TREATED?

Treatment depends on the type of sore eyes you have. There is no specific treatment for viral conjunctivitis, as your immune system will fight the virus on its own. You may place a cool, wet washcloth over your eyes to ease the discomfort. Your ophthalmologist may prescribe antibiotic eye drops for bacterial conjunctivitis. For allergic conjunctivitis, your ophthalmologist may recommend certain eye drops or ointment.

HAVE REGULAR EYE EXAMS AND VISION TESTING

Everyone regardless of age should have regular eye exams and vision testing to maintain eye health. These may include visual acuity testing, refraction assessment, eye muscle tests, slit-lamp examination, retinal examination, and certain clinic tests to screen for other diseases, such as glaucoma and dry eyes. Other tests that may be requested include OCT, fundus photos, fluorescein angiography (FA), topography (a scan of the surface of your cornea), and automated visual field exam.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

EYE TESTS AND ASSESSMENTS FOR GLAUCOMA

A complete eye exam is the only sure way to diagnose glaucoma. To diagnose glaucoma, your ophthalmologist will measure your eye pressure, inspect your eye's drainage system, examine your optic nerve for damage, test your field of vision, take a picture or computer measurement of your optic nerve, and measure the thickness of your cornea.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on the tests and assessments to diagnose glaucoma.

HOW TO MANAGE YOUR EYE HEALTH IF YOU HAVE DIABETES

Diabetes can damage the heart, kidneys, and blood vessels, including those in the eye. To prevent eye damage from diabetes, maintain good control of your blood sugar. Follow your doctor's diet and exercise plan. If you have not had an eye exam with an ophthalmologist, it is crucial to have one now. Make sure to never skip the follow-up exams that your ophthalmologist recommends.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.
