A new study has revealed that losing sleep for just a few nights can take a serious toll on heart health. Researchers found that getting only 4.25 hours of sleep per night for three consecutive nights triggered a surge in 90 inflammatory proteins in the blood—many tied to heart failure, coronary artery disease, and atrial fibrillation.
Alarmingly, even young and otherwise healthy individuals were shown to be at risk. Experts say the findings highlight how quickly poor sleep can strain the heart and increase the chances of long-term illness.
Beyond heart health, sleep loss raises stress hormones, disrupts blood sugar, and interferes with appetite control, which may lead to overeating, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. It also weakens the immune system and affects mental health, impairing mood, memory, and decision-making.
Researchers emphasize that sleep is not a luxury but a vital part of overall health. Prioritizing rest, they say, may be one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect the heart and body from long-term harm.
