Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Leptospira. It is transmitted to humans primarily through contact with urine of infected animals or by water, soil, or food contaminated with their urine.
Symptoms:
- High fever
- Severe headache
- Muscle aches
- Abdominal pain
- Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
- Red eyes
- Rash
Effects on Pregnancy:
1. Miscarriage: High risk, especially during the first trimester.
2. Premature Birth: Increased likelihood due to maternal fever and illness.
3. Intrauterine Growth Restriction: Possible due to maternal illness.
4. Neonatal Infection: If the mother has active disease during delivery.
Prevention:
- Avoid Contaminated Water: Do not swim or wade in water that might be contaminated with animal urine.
- Use Protection: Wear protective clothing if you are likely to come into contact with animal urine or potentially contaminated water or soil.
- Animal Hygiene: Keep pets' living areas clean and properly dispose of animal urine.
Treatment:
Leptospirosis is treatable with antibiotics, which are safe to use in pregnancy under a doctor's supervision. Seek medical care immediately if you suspect you have been exposed to Leptospirosis, especially if you are pregnant.
